VIRGIN RIVER actress Alexandra Breckenridge shared her favorite childhood Christmas tradition that she now passes down to her own children during the holiday season.

“My mother always used to let me open one gift on Christmas Eve, so I try to carry that over now,” Breckenridge told PEOPLE. “Usually, I was very persuasive, and I’d end up getting to let me open all of my presents, so my kids kind of try [the same thing].”

“They’re doing the same shtick. They’re like, ‘But two, maybe just two?’ And so my husband and I will pick out the ones for them to open,” she continued.

Breckenridge previously discussed her family and the way that becoming a parent completely changed her outlook on life. She and her husband, Casey Hooper, gave birth to their first son in 2016 and welcomed a daughter in 2017.

“When Jack was born, I experienced a kind of love I never had before,” Breckenridge told PEOPLE in 2017 before her daughter’s birth. “Some people say, ‘How could [you] possibly love two of them?’ but I’m not even worried about that. If I can love the first one this much, I’ll love the second one this much too!”

“When I first held my baby, the world melted away and I knew he was the most important thing I’d ever do,” she added in a 2017 interview.

She found out she was pregnant with daughter, Billie, on her birthday.

“I found out I was having a girl on my birthday,” she said. “My doctor called, and I said, ‘This is the best birthday present ever!’ I really wanted to have a girl.”

Meanwhile, Breckenridge’s career also keeps family in view as her show, VIRGIN RIVER, is largely moral and appropriate for families to enjoy together. Because of this, VIRGIN RIVER remains an extremely popular show with a large fanbase. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

The first episode of Season 6 of VIRGIN RIVER has a moral worldview, as the show’s characters are always willing to help and support one another, ex. Mel’s “sewing circle” volunteers to fix her dress, and Jack pledges to support Preacher. However, there is some excessive language and a plot line that involves one character lying to another about their relationship to steal his money. There is also some alcohol use, as well as a scene with two unmarried people sleeping in bed together and an unmarried couple preparing to welcome a baby, so MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.

As Breckenridge continues to enjoy success, it is fun to hear how she also prioritizes making memories with her family during the Christmas season.
