Christian artist Cody Carnes is sharing a little bit about his musical favorites.

While appearing on Hope Nation’s “Songs From a Mug” segment, Carnes answered questions about his life by playing a song.

“Oh, what a great start!” Carnes said as he opened the first question. “’Favorite worship song to sing with a live audience.’ Hard to choose, there is a lot of favorites. I think right now, and really for the last year, it’s been this.”

Carnes played “Firm Foundation,” a song that he collaborated with Maverick City Music on.

The lyrics read:

Christ is my firm foundation

The rock on which I stand

When everything around me is shaken

I’ve never been more glad

That I put my faith in Jesus

‘Cause He’s never let me down

He’s faithful through generations

So why would He fail now

He won’t…

After singing the song, Carnes pulled out a fun question. “A song by the boy band you’d most like to be a part of.”

“It’s definitely NSYNC for me,” he said. “I was an NSYNC kid, had the live DVD in elementary school and was definitely in my living room learning all the dance moves.”

He played the band’s “(God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time On You.”

The next question dove into his musical history, asking him what the first song he learned to play was. He shared some sweet, nostalgic memories.

“For this one I think about my grandmother, I think about growing up in church and learning to play my first hymns, and this was my grandmother’s favorite song,” Carnes shared. “I was very close to her growing up and this is one of the first songs I learned how to play on guitar and sing at church…this old, beautiful, timeless hymn.”

Carnes played the classic “It Is Well With My Soul” by Horatio Spafford.

The singer shared several other songs but ended on a very special note with a song by his wife, Kari Jobe.

“What a great one to end on. ‘A song by your favorite person or band to tour with.’ Well, this would be my wife. She’s the best. She’s been inspiring me for a long time,” he said fondly. “I love leading worship with her, writing songs with her, and this was the first song I ever heard of hers.” He then played “Revelation Song.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Carnes’ heart for worship and his many accolades:

“Just trying to write something that that ministers to the Lord and edifies the church, you know. That’s the two main goals.”

Today, Carnes’ music has been influential throughout the world, and he has also won multiple awards. Opry reported, “In 2020, he released his studio album, Run To The Father, which earned him his first GRAMMY Award nomination. He also received GRAMMY nominations for ‘The Blessing’ and the album The Blessing (Live) for the 63rd and 64th Awards.”

Last year, he released his live worship album “Firm Foundation.”

“I walked through a few of the hardest moments of my life in the 18 months that all the songs from this album were written in,” Carnes said of the album. “Jesus is the joy in chaos. He is the peace that passes understanding. He is certain hope in uncertain times. He is the only firm foundation.”
