Clean Comedian Shares Funny Way He Met His Wife

Family-friendly comedian Nate Bargatze got to chat about his new Netflix special, YOUR FRIEND, NATE BARGATZE with TODAY’s Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager.

Bargatze shared about the special and how he fell for his wife.

“We met at Applebee’s,” the comedian recalled. “We waited tables at Applebees together in Nashville and so, we met there before I started comedy…She was very funny. I remember she was on a broom. She was sweeping, and I think she was on the broom and she like clicked it like a witch. Like she was gonna ride the broom.”

Bargatze made a clicking sound with his mouth, like how cowboys call their horses.

“[It’s like she was saying] get on, and it was just very funny and very cute,” he explained.

Bargatze’s special just came out on Christmas Eve, and the family comic just announced his 2025 tour, called Big Dumb Eyes, which is also the name of his new book. The tour starts in early April in Oslo, Norway, and ends in mid-December 2025 in Nashville.

YOUR FRIEND, NATE BARGATZE is the first part of a two-special deal with Netflix. Bargatze is set to have another special air in 2025 or later. Netflix and Bargatze haven’t revealed any other details about it.

In late August, Pollstar reported that Bargatze is the top-earning comedian in the world.

Bargatze “maintains a tight grip on No. 1 with his massive $79.9 million box-office haul,” Pollstar reported. “It is over $35 million more than any other gross listed. With 163 performances reported – the most of any comic in the lineup – his attendance is also the best of the top 25, peaking at 1,098,929. Austin fans bought the most tickets to see him perform with 33,276 sold for three performances at Moody Center, April 21-22, while his highest gross was $2.23 million from two shows at Heritage Bank Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Jan. 13.”

A likely reason for his success is that most of his content is appropriate for families, which means more people can watch and listen to his content together.

Bargatze is also a believer. Last year, he shared the reason why he does clean comedy: “It’s how I grew up,” he told the Deseret News. “I grew up Southern Christian, and [clean comedy is] all we could watch. It’s just how we were. I knew I would never be dirty. I’ve always been clean.”
