Disney Takes Highest TV Viewing for Last 6 Months
By Movieguide® Contributor
Nielsen has released data revealing the media companies that have garnered the most watch time. Disney took first place.
Nielsen’s new Media Distributor Gauge removes “the siloes of traditional television versus streaming, and puts all content distributors on a level playing field to allow for additional perspective of TV viewing today.”
In April — and for the last six months — Disney had the most total TV usage, taking 11.5% of all views for the month. YouTube followed with 9.6%.
The Hollywood Reporter clarified that these numbers include multiple Disney-owned platforms.
“That figure includes streaming on Hulu and Disney+ — which accounted for 4.9 percent of all TV use for the reporting period (which ran from April 1-28) — as well as ABC, ESPN and Disney’s other cable and streaming properties. ABC and ESPN carried the most watched single telecast in April — the record-breaking NCAA women’s basketball championship game, which clocked in at 18.87 million viewers,” the outlet reported.
NBCUniversal follows YouTube at 8.9%. Paramount is next at 8.8%. Warner Bros Discovery took 8.1%.
Disney has remained at the top of the gauge since November 2023. The Hollywood Reporter said, “NBCU and Paramount finished second or third from November to January, thanks in large part to NFL games on their respective broadcast networks, and Paramount nearly overtook Disney in February, when CBS aired the Super Bowl. Both dropped behind YouTube for March and April.”
“With more programs available across platforms, it’s vital for creators, advertisers and the industry at large to understand what and where audiences are watching,” Karthik Rao, CEO of Nielsen, said of the new data aggregation tool. “The Media Distributor Gauge is a perfect complement to the The Gauge and serves as the first convergent TV comparison of its kind. Together, these reports paint the most complete picture of TV viewing today.”
Disney will likely continue to build on this success as the company bundles its streaming service with others. Movieguide® reported:
Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery have announced a new bundle plan that would see them combine Disney+ and Hulu with Max.
“On the heels of the very successful launch of Hulu on Disney+, this new bundle with Max will offer subscribers even more choice and value,” said Joe Earley, the president of direct-to-consumer for Disney. “This incredible new partnership puts subscribers first, giving them access to blockbuster films, originals, and three massive libraries featuring the very best brands and entertainment in streaming today.”
“This new offering delivers for consumers the greatest collection of entertainment for the best value in streaming, and will help drive incremental subscribers and much stronger retention,” said JB Perrette, CEO and President, Global Streaming and Games, Warner Bros. Discovery.
