Freedom From Alcohol is Possible — This Rock Star Shares How

Alice Cooper is sharing how God “healed” his alcoholism and changed his life for the better.
“I was in control of this drinking. At least, I thought I was, until I realized I wasn’t in control. It was now medicine,” he explained in a video for TBN. “And I didn’t really even like the taste of it anymore, but I had to have it. I woke up one morning, threw up blood, and Sheryl goes, ‘Party’s over.’”
Cooper and Sheryl have been married since 1976 and share three children.
“I was in an institute, you know, to stop, and you know what? After two days, I felt great, but I kept going, ‘When I get out of here, I’m going to go back to my thing,’” Cooper continued, describing the worry he felt about falling off the wagon once he left rehab.
The rock star said, “I came out of there — never once had a fallback. Never fell back on alcohol, never fell back on drugs. Thirty-nine years. So God literally took it away from me.”
“I’m not a cured alcoholic. I was a healed alcoholic. What’s the difference? Well, God took it away from me,” he continued.
Cooper also spoke about what his faith means to him, saying, “[Jesus] is the core of everything. He’s life itself. He’s the light.”
“I mean, if we don’t all revolve around Christ and we’re way out in space, He draws in you. He’s the light,” he concluded. “You’re drawn to that light, and it’s nothing you can explain in words. It’s something that happens to your heart.”
In another video about his faith, Cooper said, “I came to Christ because of my fear of God,” explaining that his early experiences with Christianity all stemmed from a fear of going to Hell.
“But I went to another church, and that pastor preached the love of Christ, which, now you put the two together, and it was exactly right,” he shared.
The rock star has also spoken about how his acceptance of Christ completely changed his lifestyle.
“I knew that there had to either come a point where I either accepted Christ and started living that life or if I died in this, I was in a lot of trouble, and that’s what really motivated me,” Cooper explained. “I don’t think we accept Christ. I think we accept the fact that He accepted us.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Cooper’s faith and how it helped him overcome addiction:
Although Cooper’s alcoholism did not manifest itself with him getting angry or unable to complete his shows, it was killing him on the inside.
“Internally my pancreas and liver were being destroyed,” Cooper explained. “I woke up one morning and I threw up blood and that’s how I kind of knew it was over. My wife grabbed my ear and said, ‘Hey, the party’s over.’”
Cooper told Harvest Crusade’s Greg Laurie that his wife only took him back on the condition that he go to church.
“I knew that there had to either come a point where I either accepted Christ and started living that life, or, if I died in this, I was in a lot of trouble,” Cooper said. “That’s what really motivated me. I just got to a point of saying I’m tired of this life and I know that [God] is right. When the Lord opens your eyes and you suddenly realize who you are and who He is, oh, it’s a whole different world.”
