Jennifer Hudson’s Talk Show Returns Amid WGA Strikes

Several talk shows, including THE JENNIFER HUDSON SHOW and THE TALK, are returning despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

“THE JENNIFER HUDSON SHOW is resuming production this week…and will return on Sept. 18, which was its previously-scheduled Season 2 premiere date,” Variety reported. “Hudson’s nationally-syndicated show, which is covered by the WGA, will begin its season without writers, sources say, but intends to resume WGA writers once a new contract is in place.”

“WE’RE BACK! Season 2 of THE JENNIFER HUDSON SHOW is premiering September 18th! Get your tickets to join our studio audience at the link in bio!” an Instagram post announced.

“Yaaayyyyy!!! Have a blessed great new season…” one fan commented “YESSSSS!!!! Finally!!!” another said.

Hudson’s show began airing about a year ago. The Movieguide® Grace Prize winner said of the show, “‘I hope my fans experience a good time,’ she shares. ‘I hope they discover their superpower, and I hope they feel on top of the world before they leave THE JENNIFER HUDSON SHOW. Let’s go live life, baby.’”

CBS’ THE TALK will also return, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“THE TALK is set to begin taping again, sources say, with plans for a Sept. 18 premiere. CBS declined to comment. The show, which is a signatory to the Writers Guild’s minimum basic agreement, went dark when the writers’ strike began in May,” the source said.

Drew Barrymore’s THE DREW BARRYMORE SHOW took the lead as one of the first talk shows to resume production. She is now facing backlash from the WGA. Movieguide® reported that protesters picketed outside her show as production resumed.

“I own this choice,” Barrymore wrote on Instagram. “We are in compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind. We launched live in a global pandemic. Our show was built for sensitive times and has only functioned through what the real world is going through in real time.”

Variety added that while many talk show hosts, including Hudson and Barrymore, are members of SAG-AFTRA, “they are not in violation of the strike rules because their work as talk show performers is covered by a different contract than the one in dispute by actors.”

Movieguide® previously reported:

The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes continue to affect the entertainment industry as negotiations remain in a stalemate.

“The AMPTP member companies are aligned and are negotiating together to reach a resolution. Any suggestion to the contrary is false,” the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said, according to Variety.

This came in response to the WGA’s call for individual studios that are part of the AMPTP to negotiate with WGA outside of the organization in hopes of reaching an agreement.

“In its statement earlier in the day, the WGA said that the AMPTP has refused to budge from its Aug. 11 offer. The AMPTP said that the guild has not yet responded on several issues, and said the guild has ‘remained entrenched’ in its demand for mandatory minimum staffing on TV shows,” Variety wrote.
