Country artist T.J. Sheppard shared some life lessons he’s learned to encourage people to make positive changes this New Year.

“Never forget where you came from if you want to get where you want to go in life,” he told Fox News about how your past can propel your future. Sheppard explained that he learned this firsthand from a musical legend, the king of rock himself. “This is a lesson that Elvis pulled me aside at Graceland one night and shared with me. After hearing it, I applied it to my career. Learn to be humble,” he said.

Elvis’ friendship changed Sheppard’s trajectory. “The legendary performer appreciated T.G.’s unique style and personality. As a token of their friendship, Elvis gave T.G. his first tour bus in 1976, helping to provide him with the confidence to give up the promotion business and hit the road full-time,” Sheppard’s website explains.

Another word of advice he gave was directed to celebrities, but it’s a lesson that speaks volumes about how we can interact graciously with anyone we cross paths with. “Never say ‘no’ to a fan who comes up to compliment you and asks for an autograph,” Sheppard said. He explained that a request for an autograph is the “ultimate compliment.”

Another piece of advice that applies to all of us? “Money should not be your barometer for success in your career.” He explained that friendships are far more important than money: “Long after the smoke clears and the fans stop screaming your name, your relationships will be the most important thing and comfort you more. Be sure to cherish them.”

Sheppard also encouraged people to “Never stop dreaming.”

“No matter how old you get, it’s never too late in life to be who you might have been,” he said. “Dream big, be big. Dream small, be small.”

The singer also wants us to forgo worrying this year: “Never continue to worry about a problem you have no control over.”

This is a principle Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6:34: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
