Mother On Maternity Leave Who Saved TOY STORY 2 to Produce LIGHTYEAR

By Movieguide® Staff

Fan excitement grows as Pixar looks to add to their iconic TOY STORY franchise with the upcoming LIGHTYEAR movie, produced by Pete Docter and Galyn Susman.

While Disney fans are familiar with Docter, the Oscar-winning director behind classics such as MONSTERS, INC., UP, and INSIDE OUT, few people know the story of how Susman saved TOY STORY 2.

Author Chris Albon recalled how TOY STORY 2 was accidentally deleted but later retrieved by Susman, who was on maternity leave.

“Someone at Pixar deleted all of Toy Story 2 and the backup hadn’t worked for a month, and the only reason we saw that movie was b/c someone on maternity leave had a copy of it on her home computer,” Albon tweeted. “Her name is Galyn Susman and she is now the producer for the new Lightyear movie!”

Without a backup on Susman’s home computer, TOY STORY may have been a one-off instead of a 4-movie franchise, soon to be 5.

Romper reported:

Back in 1998, Pixar was getting ready to release the follow-up to the smash hit Toy Story starring Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear. Oren Jacob, who was the chief technical officer at Pixar at the time, was sitting down to watch a cut of the film when he noticed that characters were starting to vanish. It seems someone had essentially hit the wrong button, and the movie was disappearing.

Susman, who was the supervising technical director, had a back-up copy on her home computer as she was working from home with her newborn baby. They brought her computer, wrapped in blankets to protect it, back to the studio and the movie was saved, Jacob told The Next Web.

Because once you’ve managed to save a multimillion dollar animated movie from being permanently deleted while also caring for a newborn baby, you’ve pretty much won at life, haven’t you?

TOY STORY 2 earned an Oscar nomination for Best Music, Original Song, and made Best Movies for Families in 1998 at the Movieguide® Award Gala.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads

TOY STORY 2 is a great-looking, very entertaining movie that parents and children will want to see. Buzz Lightyear and other toys rescue Woody who has been stolen by a toy collector. Great story elements include love, compassion, forgiveness, and reconciliation. The story builds jeopardy without stressing evil. This is the type of movie you would like to keep for infinity and beyond!
