MY LITTLE PONY is prancing into new territory. The popular characters based off of the 1982 toys will now star in a live-action film from Amazon MGM Studios and Hasbro Entertainment.
Although there have been several TV series and films based on the magical rainbow ponies, this is the first live-action project to date. Plans are in the early stages, and no production team or cast has been announced.
Other Hasbro MY LITTLE PONY films include 2021’s MY LITTLE PONY: A NEW GENERATION, which earned a +3 content rating from Movieguide®:
MY LITTLE PONY: A NEW GENERATION has lots of fun adventure and comedy. The animation is bright and colorful. The voice acting makes the characters come alive. The movie’s worldview has strong Christian values, though it doesn’t mention Jesus. For example, it stresses love, friendship, kindness, compassion, peace, and understanding. MY LITTLE PONY: A NEW GENERATION is a cute, positive animated story suitable for all ages, but it has some light cartoon violence and jeopardy.
My Little Pony toys first appeared in the ’80s as “My Pretty Pony,” but the name was changed the following year. Over 40 years later, the characters are still loved by children worldwide.

“The MY LITTLE PONY brand has grown tremendously since its debut,” Valerie Jurries, then Global Senior Vice President of Marketing at Hasbro, said of the franchise in 2010. “We’re so proud that what started out as the story of six magical best friends has turned into a whimsical, wonderful community filled with millions of girls from across the globe.”
Movieguide® said that Netflix’s 2023 MY LITTLE PONY: MAKE YOUR MARK series, the characters’ latest on-screen appearance, has a “fun animation style, compelling storylines and catchy musical numbers” but noted that “there are many mentions of magic powers and spells, plus some light cartoon violence.”
Hopefully there will be less violence and occult magic in the upcoming film.
Hasbro plans to bring other beloved IPs to the screen, including projects based games like Clue, Dungeons and Dragons, Trivial Pursuits and Scrabble.
The announcement of MY LITTLE PONY follows a seemingly new trend of films based off toys. 2023’s BARBIE kicked off the craze, and since then, studios have jumped on other toy-themed movies. POLLY POCKET, BARNEY, HOT WHEELS, ROCK EM’ SOCK EM’ ROBOTS, AMERICAN GIRL, MAGIC 8 BALL, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, UNO and others all have projects in the works.
No matter what your favorite childhood toy way, odds are a movie about it will become available in the near future.
