By Movieguide® Contributor
SPY KIDS was a great family film when it came out in 2001, and 23 years later, it continues to receive recognition, recently achieving a new milestone.
“The iconic family action film SPY KIDS has officially been immortalized by the Library of Congress, joining the prestigious National Film Registry for its cultural, historic, and aesthetic significance. ??” a post from Pubity announced.
“Directed by Robert Rodriguez, the 2001 hit about two siblings becoming secret agents captivated audiences and redefined family-friendly action cinema, making it a standout addition to this year’s list.”
Pubity continued, “SPY KIDS is celebrated not only for its imaginative storyline but also for its groundbreaking visual effects and diverse representation. The Cortez family’s adventures, blending high-tech gadgets with heartfelt family themes, resonated with audiences worldwide and inspired a generation of young viewers to dream big.”
Alexa PenaVega, who stars in the movie, commented on the post with emojis to express her excitement: “???????????????????”
Movieguide® celebrated SPY KIDS’ uplifting message of family and good conquering evil, earning it a +1 content score.
SPY KIDS has several positive messages and a moral worldview. The dialogue explicitly states that keeping a family together is the most challenging task of all. Marriage and family require courage and hard work, the mother says at one point. The colorful set designs, special effects and costumes in SPY KIDS are quite imaginative. The frenetic action pace doesn’t quite hold together at times, however. Not enough attention is paid to building an appropriate climax. There are also some scary characters that may give some little children nightmares. Thus, parents may want to keep their younger children at home.

PenaVega still loves creating family-friendly movies.
“[Some] people view God as either transactional or just dead, like nonexistent,” the SPY KIDS actress told CBN News. “They don’t realize how embedded He is in your life, like from when you were in your womb…He loves you. He knew you. He knit you together…I think the biggest thing is finding characters that…are broken, like all of us, but really have that redemption in the end. And…it doesn’t have to be a faith-based movie.”
