Steven Curtis Chapman Reveals How Long He Wants to Sing: ‘Still Love It’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian artist Steven Curtis Chapman doesn’t plan to retire anytime soon.

In an interview with Christian Headlines, the five-time Grammy award winner said, “The idea that I’d ever put my guitar in the case for the last time and go, ‘Well, you know, I’m retired,’ — I can’t imagine that.”

“I genuinely can’t think of a time that I’ve ever enjoyed more, singing the songs, the new music, the older songs,” he added. “… I still love it so much.”

One thing Chapman cherishes most is performing live on stage.

While at concerts, “You see the tears, you see the smiles, you see life lived together, you know that these songs have been a part of their journey,” he explained.

When he performed his song “I Will Be Here,” Chapman said, “You see couples holding hands, going, ‘We’ve battled and struggled, and you know, this song is our story.’”

“And that’s just such a cool thing that I get to experience now that I didn’t experience when I first did that song,” he continued.

He also loves it when all the instruments come together. He described those moments as “kind of the sound of heaven.”

“When you get all those instruments playing together, it creates some kind of emotion and feeling and sound that you can’t create any other way,” he explained. “And I love that so much. It’s why I’ve incorporated it in my music over the years, wherever I could.”

In a special concert that will air on TBN on Nov. 24 at 8 p.m. EST, Chapman got to perform with the Nashville Recording Orchestra.

In a series of Instagram photos, Chapman shared what the experience meant to him.

The singer wrote, “What a special weekend. Thank you to everyone who came out for a sold out night here in Nashville! A huge shout out to the incredible conductor Raffaelle Ponti, the Nashville Recording Orchestra, @dwanhill and @the.choirroom for everything you all poured into this night to make it special.”

“I’m also very excited to announce that the entire concert was filmed and will be aired as a 2 hr program on @TBN on Nov 24th at 8pm EST! I sure hope you’ll tune in and relive this amazing night,” he added.

Chapman’s music continues to make an impact on his audience. His recent song “Don’t Lose Heart” earned him his 50th No. 1 single.

“I’m completely blown away by the support for this song and for my music, even after so many years. To ever have a number one song at radio as an artist/songwriter is a dream come true, and to have fifty is simply unbelievable!” said Chapman of the achievement. “This only happens because of an amazing team and a community of friends around me who have believed in the unbelievable. I’m grateful and humbled beyond words.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Chapman:

Christian artist Steven Curtis Chapman recently shared details about his friendship and musical collaboration with musician Mitchell Tenpenny.

The pair recently released a new version of Chapman’s single “Don’t Lose Heart,” which features vocals from Tenpenny, but the duo didn’t originally plan on collaborating.

“This is one of those God-orchestrated stories,” Chapman said.

Chapman and Tenpenny met at important moments in both of their lives — Chapman had just finished his WHITE CHAIR video project, which explored grief and the healing process, while Tenpenny was grappling with the loss of his father and his mother’s breast cancer diagnosis.
