The live-action LILO & STITCH has made $280.1 million domestically so far, making it the second-highest hit of this year.
Globally, it’s raked in $610.8 million. In comparison, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING made $353.8 million globally, AP News reported June 1.
Currently the No. 1 spot for 2025 goes to A MINECRAFT MOVIE.
“This is the year of longterm playability,” said Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s senior media analyst. “The currency of word of mouth and the strong hold is more important than opening weekend dollars.”
In addition to MISSION and LILO & STITCH, KARATE KID: LEGENDS is also doing well. It brought in $21 million over last weekend, behind MISSION’s $27.3 million and LILO & Stitch’s $63 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
May is expected to close out with $973 million at the box office, which is up 75% from last year.
Being a family feature, it’s no wonder that LILO & STITCH is the top movie at the box office right now. People want to see movies they can watch with their kids and grandparents, plus most Americans are already familiar with the story.

Part of Movieguide®’s review reads: “The live action LILO & STITCH is lots of fun, with touching moments of rescue and redemption. Sometimes, however, the comical action is awkwardly shot. Eventually, Lilo’s love and devotion change Stitch’s heart, allowing him to feel love and want to be part of her family.”
“Lilo won’t quit loving Stitch no matter how much trouble he causes,” the review continues. “The live action LILO & STITCH has lots of comical action violence, however, and very brief light foul language. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.”
Next to being the second highest grossing movie of the year, LILO & STITCH also broke a box office record for being the highest-grossing movie to debut on Memorial Day weekend at $146 million, Screen Rant reported.
It currently sits at No. 8 of the highest-grossing live-action Disney remakes of all time, but with $63 million at the box office last weekend, it’s still got some time to climb the ladder and knock MUFASA: THE LION KING and others down a peg. It’s projected to gross $1.2 billion, which would put it in third place behind BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and THE LION KING, if successful.
The movie cost Disney just $2 million to make, so it’s certainly done well from an expense and profit perspective. Audiences aged 18 to 24 made up 32 percent of LILO & STICH moviegoers and those aged 25 to 34 made up 33%, which speaks to the multi-generational impact of the franchise.
Hopefully Disney will prioritize making family movies like this over movies that are politically correct, like LIGHTYEAR, and only appeal to a narrow audience.
