Why One Chick-fil-A Is Giving Away Free Meals Right Now

By Ashley Ausburn

A Chick-fil-A restaurant in Lynchburg, Virginia, is holding a coin exchange event offering free food vouchers when customers exchange $10 in rolled coins for $10 in paper money on the morning of July 29.

The event aims to help the restaurant and stimulate the coin supply amidst the national coin shortage. Customers can get up to 10 vouchers each that allow guests to receive a free entrée from listed options when redeemed.

Many restaurants and businesses have been suffering from the coin shortage, some posting signs asking for customers to use exact change or encouraging other forms of payment like credit cards and contactless transactions. According to The Federal Reserve, the coin shortage is due to the Coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. affecting the supply chain and normal circulation patterns for U.S. coins. A shortage of coins means difficulty with accurate cash transactions.

The U.S. Mint released a statement on July 23 regarding the coin shortage.

“We are asking for your help in improving this coin supply issue,” The Mint states, “You can do so by paying for things with exact change and by returning spare change to circulation. Until coin circulation patterns return to normal, it may be more difficult for retailers and small businesses to accept cash payments. For millions of Americans, cash is the only form of payment and cash transactions rely on coins to make change.”

According to an article from Fortunly, the average value of credit card transactions is $57, whereas over half of the transactions under $10 use cash, which makes it the most commonly used currency for everyday purchases. This means that the coin shortage not only affects businesses, but customers everywhere as well. Events such as the one at the Lynchburg Chick-fil-A will bring more coins into circulation at no cost to customers.

This Chick-fil-a location’s unique solution received an “overwhelming response” from customers after sharing the upcoming event on their Facebook page. An update from the store three days later said that they had “no idea the response they would get from this event” and they “anticipate doing this again.”

Customers on Facebook have shown their support for the coin exchange and the Chick-fil-A store behind it, calling it a “great idea” and praising the location for doing “a great job during the pandemic.”

Many are asking if this event will be extended to other Chick-fil-A locations, but currently the event will only be at the Wards Road store in Lynchburg.
