Why Tauren Wells Makes Music ‘With a Conscience’

Christian artist Tauren Wells identifies the flaw with modern music hits and explains how he hopes to set himself apart.
“If you listen to the top 50 songs on Spotify or Apple Music right now, what’s one quality that you get from it that enriches your soul, that makes you a better person after the three minutes you listen to it?” he asked on Instagram. “Not a lot.”
“There’s a lot that that’ll make you forget about your problems or go do whatever you want to do, and I’m not condemning that. I think that people are doing a lot of those things at a very high level and it’s incredible, but I do feel like we need to make music with a conscience—like that adds value to people’s lives beyond the moment,” he continued.
Wells certainly practices what he preaches. His album “Joy in the Morning,” which came out of the COVID lockdowns and was released last year, is packed full of songs that promote contemplation while also being entertaining and fun to listen to.
“The[se are] songs that really allow them to evaluate their inner life as well,” Wells told PEOPLE when that album was released. “I think music does this amazing job of opening up our soul and our spirit, and allowing us to take the inventory of what’s happening in our hearts.”
The singer also revealed that he could write songs of this nature only after reflecting and processing his inner life.
“I realized I could make music as inspiring and exciting as Michael Jackson while also talking about things that actually matter to me through this lens of faith and love,” he said of his songwriting journey.
“Now I can sit down at the piano and talk about what I’m going through and, because of the power of songwriting, someone else can identify with the same thing I’m feeling even though we’ve never met and I’ve never heard their story,” Wells explained.
In his commitment to God and pursuit of edifying others, Wells recently announced his plan to open a church in January next year.

Christian musician Tauren Wells and wife Lorna are celebrating the 10-year culmination of their dream to establish their own church.
“I was practicing piano,” Wells recalled when their dream began. “And a professor came into my school and said, ‘Tauren, are you called to preach?’ I said, ‘Yes, Sir, I think I am.’ He said, ‘Don’t get too wrapped up in the music.’ I now understand that the full assignment has not been songwriting and performing; the rest of the essay is still yet to be written.”
He continued, “There’s a moment where I saw the verse in Revelation 2:17 that said ‘To the one who overcomes, I will give a white stone with the name engraved on it that only they know,’ and that word ‘white stone’ leapt off the page and it was when I was really dreaming about this.”
