Will THE ELECTRIC STATE Get a Sequel? Russo Brothers Say…

By Movieguide® Contributor

THE ELECTRIC STATE directors Joe and Anthony Russo say a sequel movie isn’t likely, but the franchise may expand to a series.

“We love immersive worlds, so we always try to build worlds that have the capability for future storytelling, because that’s what we like,” the brothers said. “There is a game currently that’s being released with the movie, and we’re in discussions around a potential show idea that could work for it, but no sequel conversations as of yet.”

The mobile game, “The Electric State: Kid Cosmo,” just released on Tuesday. The adventure puzzle game serves as a prequel to the movie, following main characters Michelle and Chris as they live under the control of robot usurpers.

Part of Movieguide®’s review of the movie reads:

In THE ELECTRIC STATE, streaming on Netflix, Michelle searches for her family in an alternate history of the 1997 United States. After a devastating war between robots and humanity, the government sequesters the remaining robots in the “exclusion zone” built and controlled by SENTRE Technologies, or “the electric state.” When a slick smuggler and his robotic sidekick become keys to completing her quest, what lengths will Michelle go to in her search for the truth?

The movie has high production values with excellent acting from leads Pratt and Brown, a paring of American and British talent that elevates every scene they share. The voice acting also stands out, while the movie’s impressive special effects capture the nostalgia of the late 1990s and push one forward into a reimagined, futuristic world. The movie’s worldview is a fusion of biblical morality where virtual technocracy is dystopian and some postmodern Romantic elements, such as questionable sympathetic views of cybernetic beings. The movie’s final message is that “Real life is contact,” not virtuality. MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for adults due to thematic elements, foul language, and violence.

Though the movie is at the top of Netflix streaming charts, it has a meager 15% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score sits higher at 75%.

One critic summarized why most avid movie-watchers don’t enjoy it: “The logic and context of this world are so poorly developed that it makes the robots and their storyline almost impossible to enjoy.”

Despite the hard-to-follow storyline or absent details, some argue the movie has great visuals and production value, making good use of its $320 million budget from that standpoint.
