JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN

"British Humor"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN is a relatively clean spy spoof popular in Europe before being released in America. Rowan Atkinson, known for the bumbling Mr. Bean, plays the title character in this sequel. The movie opens with Johnny returning to the British Secret Service from an Asian monastery after he had been banished for mistakes made in an earlier job. An agent who knows about a plot to assassinate a world leader is only willing to divulge the information to Johnny. He tells Johnny about Vortex, a villainous organization comprised of rogue agents from the CIA, MI-7, and the KGB. With great determination and loyalty, Johnny pursues the villains but makes several errors of judgment and gets many opportunities to display his ineptitude.

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN is funny. Like Peter Sellers and Steve Martin, Rowan Atkinson has the ability to make someone look completely foolish while coming across as sincere. Johnny exhibits traits of integrity, loyalty, patriotism, and determination. However, there’s some bathroom humor, alcohol use, and a illegal drug used as a weapon by the villains. Also, some spies are killed in JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN, but the violence isn’t intense.

Content:

(H, BB, P, Pa, L, V, N, A, DD, M) Light humanist worldview in comical spy spoof where God is not a factor in life, but with some strong positive moral character traits of loyalty, integrity, and patriotism in a struggle between good and evil, plus ex-spy trains in an Eastern martial arts monastery; an exclamation of “Oh God” and some bathroom humor and language, including men using a bathroom and some “humor” involving dragging weights attached to one’s private areas (nothing private shown); light violence includes some assassinations as part of the plot but they aren’t gory and several fight scenes, some of which involve kicking men in their private area; no sex scenes but there is one kiss; a woman in a bikini, a man in his underwear; light alcohol use; the villains use an illegal drug as a weapon; and, the villains are rogue agents in their respective agencies engaged in murder for hire and one reference to someone being a “god” but in the sense that they are exemplary in what they do.

More Detail:

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN is a relatively clean slapstick spy comedy popular in Europe before even being released in the US. Rowan Atkinson, known for playing the bumbling Mr. Bean, stars as the title character in his second JOHNNY ENGLISH movie. He was the voice of Zazu in THE LION KING.

The movie opens with Johnny English returning to the British Secret Service from an Asian monastery after he had been banished for mistakes made in an earlier job in Mozambique. An agent who knows about a plot to assassinate a world leader is only willing to divulge the information to Johnny English. He tells Johnny about Vortex, an evil organization comprised of rogue agents from the CIA, MI-7, and the KGB. Johnny only has days before an international conference to stop Vortex. With great determination and loyalty, he pursues the villains but makes several errors of judgment and gets many opportunities to display his ineptitude.

Like Peter Sellers and Steve Martin, Rowan Atkinson has the ability to make someone look completely foolish while coming across as sincerely trying to accomplish a serious task. The truth is that this kind of humor appeals to some and not to others. Those who enjoy slapstick humor will get their money’s worth in this funny movie. Those who don’t care for slapstick probably will be disappointed.

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN has very little objectionable content. Also, Johnny exhibits worthy character traits of loyalty, patriotism, integrity, and determination. However, there IS some bathroom humor, a little alcohol, and a sinister illegal drug used as a weapon by the villains. Johnny refers to another agent as a “god” – in the sense that the agent is the model of what an agent should be. Some spies are killed, but the violence isn’t gory or intense. Finally, there is the sequence set at the Asian monastery. All in all, therefore, caution is advised for older children for JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN.
