THE LEGEND OF SURIYOTHAI is a foreign movie about a cultural hero from Thailand’s past, in the 16th Century. Suriyothai is a beautiful princess who must wed Prince Tien instead of her true love, a young warrior named Piren.
A new king takes the throne, only to be murdered by one of his wives and her secret lover, who usurp the throne in order to restore their clan to power. As the new king’s tyrannical rule spreads throughout the land, Suriyothai’s husband becomes a Buddhist monk to protect himself from the evil king and his mean queen.
Eventually, a band of loyalists joins Princess Suriyothai to assassinate the evil rulers, and her husband leaves the priesthood to unify the country and bring peace to the land. In a dramatic finale, however, the Burmese invade the new kingdom, and Queen Suriyothai heroically rides into battle with both her husband and her unrequited childhood love at her side.
THE LEGEND OF SURIYOTHAI is a magnificent historical epic. Despite the references to Buddhism, the movie focuses on the political and military aspects of its story. It speaks out against tyranny and foreign aggression, but its primary motive is to show Queen Suriyothai’s faithful duty to her husband and her country. The biggest flaw in the movie is that it spends too much of its time detailing the evil machinations of the usurpers to the throne. The movie also contains some very strong battle and execution scenes, including several beheadings, plus brief sexual nudity. Those who are interested in exploring the history of another culture, however, may find this movie very enlightening.
