What You Need To Know:
The pacing in THE LIGHTKEEPERS is a bit tedious until the women arrive and the story really begins. There are also a few plot holes that may leave viewers scratching their heads. However, the performances are amazing, especially Richard Dreyfuss as Seth. The filmmakers have created a very whimsical story. There is very little negative content and many positive choices made. There are positive references to Jesus and the Bible, mixed with some Romantic elements. Discernment is advised for this mixture, but THE LIGHTKEEPERS is a charming movie overall.
(Pa, CC, BB, RoRo, H, L, D, M) Light mixed pagan worldview with a strong Christian, biblical outlook and references to Scripture and Jesus mixed with strong Romantic elements, plus an expression of humanist doubt or skepticism is made; no obscenities and one exclamatory profanity; no violence; no sexual content; no nudity; no drinking of alcohol; pipe smoking; and, walking out on a marriage, lying and deceit.
THE LIGHTKEEPERS is a whimsical tale of two avowed “women haters” who must deal with two attractive women moving in next door for the summer. Set in 1917 on Cape Cod, Seth is a crusty, older lighthouse keeper, and Brown is a young man who literally washes ashore and becomes Seth’s assistant. Both have a past they don’t discuss and both are heartbroken by women, though the details are not revealed at first.
It’s a lonely existence at the lighthouse with only an empty cabin next door. That soon changes when Ruth, an attractive young woman, and Emmeline Bascom, her older housekeeper move in for the summer. The two men literally hide from the women so as not to have to associate with females.
However, Brown soon finds himself chatting and becoming attracted to Ruth. Seth accidentally meets up with Emmeline and they each are shocked to discover that they are married to each other. Seth had left her, changed his last name, and chose a hermit existence instead of putting up with Emmeline, who always told him he wasn’t much of a man. Emmeline thought Seth had put out to sea, but he tells her he had promised her long ago he’d give up sailing, even though he separated from her.
Ruth and Brown swim together each day and grow closer. When the time comes for Ruth to leave, Brown reveals his real name. He is a son of a wealthy man in England. Brown had jumped overboard a steamer to kill himself. He was upset over the death of his fiancée who had killed herself when his love for her had caused him to be cut off from his family’s fortune.
The two avowed bachelors must now see what they will do with both new and old loves in their lives.
THE LIGHTKEEPERS is a charming movie. The pacing is a bit tedious until the women arrive and the story really begins. There are a few plot holes that leave viewers scratching their heads. However, overall the performances are amazing, especially Richard Dreyfuss as Seth. The filmmakers have created a very whimsical story.
There is very little negative content and much positive choices made. Scripture is quoted and even explained as Emmeline struggles to forgive her husband. She thinks Jesus literally meant she only had to forgive Seth 70 x 7 times. Ruth explains that Jesus meant there was no limit to the number of times she should forgive. There are other references to God, but Ruth also says that her “Radcliff education” has made her cynical and a doubter. Brown and Ruth decide they can no longer doubt because they now are in love with each other, which comes off more Romantic than anything else.
Discernment is advised for this Romantic element, but overall THE LIGHTKEEPERS is a charming movie.
