More Detail:

DOLPHIN REEF begins with Echo, a young dolphin in the midst of being between growing up and putting off his responsibilities a little while longer. Echo is seen with his mother, Kumu, and the rest of the dolphin pod swimming around the reef.

As they swim, the audience meets different animals that live in the reef with the dolphins. The reef is home to Mantis Shrimp, Parrot Fish, Sea Turtles, Reef and Tiger Sharks, and a slew of other animals. Echo also meets a humpback whale and her calf while on an outing out at sea without his mother, which gets him in a little trouble.

Viewers learn about the humpback whale and her calf ,and how they need a male humpback to help them get back home. This is essential as the mother and her calf are met by some Orca whales and need protection from them. Viewers also see each of the animals on the reef where Echo and Kumu live, and what they do to help keep the reef healthy and thriving.

When Echo wanders off again by himself, Kumu comes to his rescue, and they’re trapped by another dolphin pod that tries to hurt them. Their dolphin pod comes to save them, but in the process, Echo gets separated and spends the night alone away from his family. This was the experience that brought Echo to his senses and made him realize he needs Kumu to teach him how to survive on his own.

When Kumu finds Echo the following day, they get right to work on teaching Echo how to be an independent dolphin. Kumu takes Echo to a place called the muddy shallows to teach him a hunting technique. It takes Echo a few tries, but he is able to master the technique before the rest of his pod joins them.

When the pod arrives, Echo tries his new technique on a group of fish that has just swum into their area. Echo does it successfully, and now he and the pod get to eat! When the rest of the pod realizes Echo can now hunt, they work as a team to chorale more fish while Echo uses the technique to trap them.

By the end of the movie, Echo knows more about being able to survive on his own. The audience also gets to see each different story about the other animals in the reef wrap us as well.
