Netflix Adds Uma Thurman, Henry Golding to Upcoming THE OLD GAURD Sequel

By Movieguide® Staff

Production recently confirmed new talent for the upcoming sequel to Charlize Theron’s Netflix movie, THE OLD GUARD.

Actors Uma Thurman and Henry Golding recently joined Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor in THE OLD GUARD 2.

Movieguide® honored the first comic-book adaptation, THE OLD GUARD, as one of the Best Movies for Mature Audiences in 2020.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

THE OLD GUARD follows a group of independent soldiers who can self-heal from any injury, which makes them significantly older than they appear. For obvious reasons, the soldiers try to stay under the radar while they travel the world helping other people. After a setup, the group learns that many people are hot on their trail, looking to exploit their abilities for personal gain. Andy (short for Andromeda) is the group’s ringleader. She tries to protect her team at all costs, but will her old age and the conflict take its toll?

THE OLD GUARD is one of Netflix’s more engaging original movies. The characters have compelling backstories. Also, the movie has a strong moral worldview with positive Christian elements. One of the good guys is a Christian who affirms her belief in God, even when someone says otherwise. Also, one character’s jaded attitude causes her to lose faith in humanity, but the Christian character seems to give her hope. MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for THE OLD GUARD because of lots of foul language, two homosexual characters and intense, bloody action violence.

Deadline recently reported of the sequel:

The film based on the graphic novel series created by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández followed a covert team of immortal mercenaries that were suddenly exposed, fighting to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member was discovered. Details with regard to the sequel’s plot have thus far been kept under wraps, but the project appears to be gaining momentum, with its first castings since its initial announcement back in August of last year.

Movieguide® previously reported:

The first movie was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who said that she will step down as director for the sequel but will still produce.

“I love The Old Guard and the story and characters I was honored to put into the world. It was exciting to disrupt the genre,” Prince-Bythewood said. “I have decided not to direct the sequel, but will stay on as a producer. I leave our franchise in good hands as my girl Vic Mahoney takes on this next chapter.”

Mahoney, who has worked on STARS WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, is excited to take on the new position.

“Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard,” Mahoney said. “I must’ve watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement–being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses. Ever eager to continue pushing the genre for action-loving audiences. Warmly tipping my hat to the world Gina, Charlize, Rucka, Fernández, Skydance, Netflix, Marc Evans Productions, Denver & Delilah Films and the entire Team daringly put forward.”

“We are beyond thrilled that Vic is joining The Old Guard team,” added Theron, and the movie’s other stars. “Her passion for these characters and her ambitious vision for the movie overwhelmed us all. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with her.”
