Zachary Levi Blasts Studios For ‘Garbage’ Movies

By Movieguide® Contributor

SHAZAM! star Zachary Levi recently slammed movie studios for putting out “garbage” and encouraged audiences to be more discerning when choosing movies.

“I personally feel like the amount of content that comes out of Hollywood that is garbage — they don’t care enough to actually make it great for you guys. They don’t,” Levi said while appearing at Fan Expo Chicago.

The actor continued, “How many times do you watch a trailer and go, ‘Oh my… this looks so cool!’ Then you go to the movie and it’s like, ‘This was what I get?’ They know that once you’ve already bought the ticket and you’re in the seat, they’ve got your money.”

Levi told fans that, in order to change this, they need “to not go to the garbage. We have to actively not choose the garbage. It’ll help. It’ll help a lot.”

Movieguide® always encourages viewers to vote with their entertainment dollars and choose what is Good, True, Pure, and Lovely, and to avoid excess immorality.

These comments echo statements Levi made surrounding the release of SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS, which underperformed at the box office.

“The audience score is still quite good, but the critics’ score was very oddly and perplexingly low, and people were insanely unkind,” he said at the time.

Levi also tweeted that FURY OF THE GODS was “a perfect family movie, and yet a lot of families aren’t aware of that. Which is just a shame,” blaming the studio for lackluster promotional efforts.

Movieguide® previously reported on FURY OF THE GODS and why it bombed at the box office:

SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS strayed from these positive elements, instead emphasizing a “Mixed pagan worldview that accepts the false, polytheistic Greek mythological notion of gods and…other supernatural powers that are a bit occult.”

While there are some redeeming qualities such as “celebrating family and saving and protecting people,” the movie is marred by its pagan worldview and acceptance of homosexuality.

As Movieguide® frequently reports, movies that emphasize positive, moral content perform better at the box office compared to movies that reject these themes. SHAZAM!’s success compared to the beating SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS took at the box office exemplifies this principle.

He has recently spoken out in support of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA amid the ongoing strikes.

“I remain an outspoken critic of the exploitative system that us artists are subject to work in since I started my journey in this business 25 years ago,” he said in a statement via Deadline. “This strike is necessary to protect ourselves, our writers, and all those working in production who make the industry move.”
