John Crist Explains How Comedy Lets People Say ‘The Quiet Part Out Loud’

Comedian John Crist joined the hosts of ABC’s GOOD MORNING AMERICA to share what inspired his “Emotional Support Tour.”
“Live, you see something and then [in] the group text with your buddies, you send something different because everybody sees the world and they go, ‘That doesn’t add up to me.’ That’s what the show is. That’s all the show is—just the group text with your buddies out loud,” Crist explained.
The comedian added that his best videos are the ones that don’t have a ton of views because his followers can’t post them publicly, but they can share them privately with their friends.
On “Instagram, they have like 400 likes and like 4 million shares. Why is that? Because somebody goes, ‘Oh my goodness that’s the truest thing I’ve ever seen but I can’t post this to everybody because somebody’s going to be mad,'” he said.
Crist is in the middle of his tour after adding more dates last fall.
“I’m not surprised we’re adding all these new dates! Every time we do the show and post clips of it online, the comments are filled with people asking, ‘When are you coming to my city?,'” he said last October. “And every night in our meet and greets, people tell us they flew to see the show, so we figured we’d add as many more cities as possible in 2024!”
The popularity of comedy, though, points to a deeper trend.
“I feel like when everybody gets together, especially during COVID, you would see stuff on the news, and you would see stuff, and you would be like, ‘That doesn’t seem right.’ But nobody could really say,” Crist explained.
“You notice comedians. Every comedian’s show is sold out these days. The boom of comedy is so big these days. Unfortunately, it’s kind of like when people are depressed, they need alcohol,” he compared. “That’s why a lot of people watch this show [GOOD MORNING AMERICA]. They follow you guys to help them kind of make sense of everything. That’s the same with comedy. All you got to do is just say the quiet part out loud.”

“When I was in rehab…obviously everything was taken away from [me], and then I remember—and I didn’t even have any knowledge of this prior to going in—but…everything was taken away. And I go, ‘I don’t know; I don’t think I have any addictions. I’m fine’…I’m not, you know, itching, or I go, ‘I don’t know. I’m pretty good,’” Crist explained.
When visitors came to the center, Crist found out that he really did have an addiction.
“Then I remember it was family week, and everybody’s kind of family, people’s wives would come to visit them, and this other guy in treatment center, his wife came, and then we were in the cafeteria…She walked by and goes, ‘Hey, just want to let you know, like I’m a big fan,’ Crist told Delony. “And it like, oh dude… I was like, ‘Oh, this is my addiction.’ She goes, ‘I just want to let you know, like, your stuff is so hilarious.’ And I go, ‘Oh, I’m back.’”
Once he figured out his addiction and came out of rehab, fear kept Crist from confessing the truth to his friends and family. Nevertheless, he had people around him who could tell when he had a bout of dishonesty. They were able to help Crist manage his problem.
