For “Pioneer Woman” Ree Drummond, serving her church’s children’s ministry is a blessing she never expected.

“I grew up in the Episcopal Church and we never had the little 5-minute portion of the service known as ‘Children’s Time’ in the liturgy,” she began a recent Facebook post. “My grandmother’s small-town Disciples of Christ church did, though, so I had more than a few memories of sitting up front as the minister told a story or demonstrated a little life lesson that young souls and ears could hear.”

Drummond continued, “Our Presbyterian church in Pawhuska, the church where Ladd grew up and where we’ve attended for most of our marriage, has always had Children’s Time, and around 2004, when our then-minister put out the call for more members of the congregation to fill various roles in our services, Ladd signed me up for four Sundays in a row of Children’s Time without asking me.”

Drummond shared that she was “freaked out” when she learned than her husband signed her up without her permission.

“I knew kids could be unpredictable, particularly in front of a church ‘audience,’” she said, “However, I didn’t want to call the church and ask them to cross out my name, which my husband had mercilessly scribbled on that sign-up sheet, so I plowed forward and decided to get the four Sundays over with to prove to Ladd that I simply was not cut out for that kind of role.”

In a comedic turn of events, Drummond said, “22 years later, I’m still doing Children’s Time — except there are no four-week stints. It’s become a lifelong appointment, it seems, and I do it every Sunday. 😂”

She added, “The kids still throw me for a loop and stump me, and they sometimes don’t laugh at my jokes as hard as I do, which can be awkward in church. But man, what a ride it’s been! Last Sunday, Children’s Time was more crowded than usual, and I loved it.”

Drummond concluded, “What a gift Children’s Time has been to me. (Don’t tell Ladd I said that.)”

Colossians 3:23-24 says, “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.” Although children’s ministry wasn’t originally what she wanted to do, Drummond gave it her all and sees how God’s used it to bless her and the children.

Aside from writing cook books and hosting cooking shows, Drummond frequently shares about her faith. Back in February, she posted a photo of her and her siblings being baptized as kids.

“My mom says there was a huge snowstorm that day; of course, that didn’t keep her from throwing us in her Oldsmobile and driving to church,” she recalled. “Baby Betsy almost didn’t make it into the photo! Fr. Evans and Fr. Fellows, I’ll always remember them. Also, what was I looking at? I was easily distracted, even then.”

Sometimes God may call you do to something outside of your comfort zone, as He did with Drummond, and in the end, you’ll realize it’s exactly what you needed.
