What You Need To Know:
IRENE IN TIME is intermittently successful. It has some touching, funny scenes, but the narrative meanders a lot and the ending is too cryptic. Ultimately, the movie is a depressing experience. Irene never really finds true happiness. The movie contains light foul language. Also, there is a very strong subplot involving Irene’s lesbian friend. The friend tries to encourage Irene to become a lesbian, to the point of dating and kissing another woman. Also, the movie has a radical feminist message which seems to conclude that women should never put much faith in men, even their own fathers. Of course, it is always better to put one’s faith in God instead of people, even one’s own family.

(PaPa, H, Ro, HoHoHo, FeFe, B, LL, V, SS, A, DD, M) Strong pagan, slightly mixed worldview with light humanist and Romantic (in the sense of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Romantic philosophy) elements and very strong pro-homosexual subplot concerning a close friend to the heroine, who experiments with kissing a woman in one scene, plus a strong feminist subtext showing that most men are unreliable partners, plus a slightly moral theme showing the importance of the father-daughter relationship, but the theme is twisted by the movie’s confused worldview and a depressing, weird ending; one or two obscenities, two strong profanities and eight light profanities; light violence includes implied suicide and talk about boat being lost at sea; shots of women kissing other women, protagonist’s lesbian friend advises her to become a lesbian, protagonist has date with woman, and they kiss, but she does not become a lesbian, adultery, and implied fornication; no nudity; alcohol use; father steals pills from daughter and takes them for his pill habit; and, lying but truth comes out, cheating, gambling, and hopeless ending.

IRENE IN TIME is a sad comedy about a woman having problems with men, who never measures up to her doting, dead father.
Dedicated to the writer/director’s own daughter, the movie opens with Irene talking with two of her late father’s gambling friends. The friends tell wild stories about her father’s gambling, including one about how he won the boat that he named “Irene in Time.”
While her mother has several friends over at the house, Irene’s current boyfriend visits her for a quiet dinner. Irene wants to get more serious, but the boyfriend clearly is not interested.
Eventually, the movie cuts to Irene and some women friends of herself and her mother’s discussing the ups and downs of their relationships with their father and with men. When it comes Irene’s turn, it is clear that she is still very attached to her doting father. Her father seems to have treated Irene much better than all the other fathers. Irene is having trouble, however, finding the right man to love and marry. Either she turns them off in some way or they turn out to be cads.
She finally seems to find the right man, but then learns a troubling secret about her father that proves personally devastating to her perception of her life.

Also, the acting is uneven, especially by some of the lesser supporting actors. Ultimately, the movie is a depressing experience. Irene never really finds true happiness. Although there is only a limited amount of foul language and no extremely graphic sexual situations, there is a very strong subplot involving Irene’s lesbian friend. The friend tries to encourage Irene to become a lesbian, to the point of dating and kissing another woman.
IRENE IN TIME sometimes acknowledges the importance of the father-daughter relationship, and the mother-daughter relationship, but the third act undercuts those relationships and becomes too depressing. Also, the movie has a radical feminist message which seems to conclude that women should never put much faith in men, even their own fathers. Of course, it is always better to put one’s faith in God instead of people, even one’s own family.
