Christian Musicians Perform at Drive-In Theaters to Help Raise Money for Charity

By Allyson Vannatta, Senior Writer

The Salvation Army and Awakening Events have teamed up to take some of your favorite Christian musicians on a drive-in theater concert tour to benefit those in need.

Artists like TobyMac, Steven Curtis Chapman, Casting Crowns, and Michael W. Smith are among those performing.

Casting Crowns, TobyMac and Michael W. Smith have had songs featured in movies over the years. You can hear “Oh My Soul” by Casting Crowns in INDIVISIBLE, while TobyMac’s “Feelin’ So Fly” can be heard in THE GAME PLAN and Smith’s music can be heard in LEFT BEHIND: THE MOVIE with Kirk Cameron.

According to the Christian Post, the performers will gift $44,000 in donations to the Salvation Army during the concerts. The money will help the organization provide basic needs for those who face “long-term impacts” from the coronavirus pandemic.

Dale Bannon, national community relations and development secretary of The Salvation Army, said in a statement shared with The Christian Post, “The Salvation Army is so grateful for the generosity of Awakening Events, which will help us continue serving vulnerable Americans in need.”

Bannon continued, “The gift from Awakening Events will allow our local communities to provide hope to individuals and families, and we pray that their generosity inspires others to also give.”

Awakening Events is a Christian booking company and wanted to partner with the charitable organization because of their commitment to “Meeting human need by providing hope to millions of Americans.”

The president and founder of Awakening Events told the CP, “We’re honored to support their efforts to provide food, shelter, counseling, financial assistance and spiritual support to individuals and families in need during these difficult times.

Curtis Pinkerton, director of marketing for Awakening Events added, “In the climate of today we need more positivity in the world, and we take great pride in being able to offer some of that positivity safely.”

The drive-in concert series was created for people to have enjoyable entertainment with their family from the safety and comfort of their own cars. All social distancing rules will be enforced at the venues.

TobyMac has been posting updates from the tour on his Instagram sharing new dates, behind the scenes photos with his band and photos from each concert stop.
