How Colton Dixon Balances Fatherhood and Music Career: ‘God Gives Grace’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian music star and AMERICAN IDOL alum Colton Dixon is sharing how he balances family life with his music career.

In an interview with The Washington Times, Dixon discussed his favorite part of life right now.

“Honestly anything that my kids are going,” he began. “I just, you know, my twins are three and I know it’s not career related necessarily, but every time I come home they’re doing something new or they’ve learned a new song or it’s a new princess or, you know, whatever. It’s just so much fun.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the joy Dixon finds in fatherhood:

Dixon, 29, shares twin daughters Ava Dior and Athens Elizabeth with his wife, Annie.

“I never really understood what parents meant, when they’re like, ‘Man, I didn’t realize I could love someone so much,’” Dixon told PEOPLE. “But then you have kids and you go, ‘Oh my gosh. I would literally do anything. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for them.’ ”

Dixon, who celebrated his first Father’s Day last weekend, added: “It’s just a whole new layer of what love looks like and it’s been amazing. Just trying to be the best dad I can be, even at this stage, but it’s been so fun.”

The singer also explained how he manages being a father while touring.

“First thing I will say is God gives grace to those who he calls, and I’m so thankful for that,” Dixon expressed. “There’s even a verse, I’m forgetting the reference, but he basically says that those who leave, you know, their home, their spouse, their kids, their family, whatever in my name will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.”

The verse Dixon referred to is Matthew 19:29, which reads:

And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.

“Man, I’m like, ‘Lord, that verse is for me,’ Dixon continued. “I’m so thankful for that verse. It just encourages me in moments where I do miss home or I do miss family or whatever it is. It just keeps me going, but I’m thankful for technology.”

Dixon recently returned to the AMERICAN IDOL stage to perform with Danny Gokey and Melinda Doolittle to honor the late Mandisa.

“So thankful that @americanidol would choose to recognize such a beautiful soul. Disa – you will be missed. Thanks to everyone for praising with us last night,” Dixon wrote on his Instagram.

His latest song, “Rest Of My Life,” will be featured in Angel Studios’ upcoming movie SIGHT.

“Sometimes when you write a song, it takes on a life of its own,” Dixon said. “After I experienced the film and got to meet Dr. Wang in person, the lyrics and cadence of the song took on a whole new meaning. I can’t wait for this song and the film to impact the world in a powerful way.”

Movieguide® reported:

Colton Dixon has released his latest single, “Rest of My Life,” a track off of the soundtrack for Angel Studios’ upcoming SIGHT.

“When I first heard ‘Rest of My Life,’ I instantly knew it was a fit for the film’s epilogue,” Ryan Svendsen, Angel Studios Head of Music, said of the song. “It is extremely rare for the spirit and lyrics of a song to be an uncanny match for a scene but the stars aligned beautifully with Colton’s track for SIGHT. We are honored to have Colton’s uplifting music bring out this important moment and we know that this song will be a reminder of not only the film but of the miracle that we are not confined by the things that we can physically see…”

A synopsis of SIGHT describes the movie as, “The riveting true story of Dr. Ming Wang, a Chinese immigrant-turned-renowned eye surgeon who harnesses the pain of his past to try to restore the sight of a blind orphan.”
