Danny Gokey Reminds Followers ‘[God] Builds Legacy’

Danny Gokey recently shared some words of encouragement for anyone who feels like their time has passed.

“When I started getting into music, the Lord told me to lay down my music. Lay it down and serve the local church,” the Christian artist said in an Instagram video. “And the Lord was specific to me and said, ‘Use your gift at the church you’re at. Serve the pastor with your gift, and give it to this church.’ Essentially what I noticed God did with me — as I began to obey God and build what He wanted me to build, He began to build me and build the platform at the right time.”

Gokey explained that he was 29 on AMERICAN IDOL and got dropped by his record label the same year. It wasn’t until he turned 34 that he got his first No. 1 single.

“I’m 43 now, so according to the world, I’m used up, I’m old…but according to God’s plan, was Moses ever used up?” he said. “Our world idolizes youth because, for some reason, it’s one thing that goes away. You would be surprised how many people feel like they’re used up…and they feel like they’re a lost cause. God doesn’t work that way. He builds legacy.”

The “Tell Your Heart To Beat Again” singer has spoken about his own fears of aging out of music industry success.

“This world can kind of brainwash you into thinking that in your late twenties, it’s too late for you in the music industry, right?” he told Jesus Calling. “Interestingly enough, what I thought was over in my life was just the beginning.”

Gokey’s latest single, “Montaña (Corito),” also reinforces the idea of trusting in God’s plan.

“‘Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you,’” he wrote in an Instagram post. “Check out my take on the traditional Latin American folk song ‘Si Tuvieras Fe,’ and be encouraged to believe for BIG things because, with God, ALL things are possible!”

Movieguide® previously reported on the role faith has played in Gokey’s life:

Christian artist Danny Gokey is sharing an important message about God’s glory and how it works in our lives.

“Your relationship with God will never be a mimic of someone else’s relationship. Here’s why: because your relationship is a real interaction you have with Jesus,” he said in an Instagram video. “The boldness of who I am today…I’ve had real encounters with this God. This God has changed me. He has shaped me. He has molded me,”

Gokey continued, “You know, we let the past go, we forget those things that are behind us, we press on towards the mark. Towards Christ, right? To know Him is the goal. You’ll notice, as you get to know your master, as you get to know the savior, He’ll begin to shape you and mold you.”

“The Bible says, ‘For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.’ When we sin, the glory of God left us, meaning the glory He created us for. We each have an individual glory to be seen…God wants to restore that glory in us,” the singer explained.
