Disney Star David Henrie Shares an Important Message About Commitment on Social Media

By Ben Kayser, Managing Editor

It’s not everyday teenagers see messages of purity and commitment in our culture. Especially on social media platforms like Instagram, where often social influencers sexualize themselves and promote a lifestyle of self-indulgence and self-gratification. That’s why David Henrie’s Instagram post on April 21st stood out. Henrie, who’s 28, and is recognizable in such TV shows as WIZARD’S OF WAVERLY PLACE, THAT’S SO RAVEN and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, as well as the movies PAUL BLART: MALL COP 2 and LITTLE BOY.

On April 21, 2017, David married his girlfriend Maria Cahill, a former Miss Delaware. One year later Henrie celebrated his anniversary and shared a photo from his wedding where David, wearing boxing gloves, stands next to his cheering bride. The caption reads, “April 21st, 2017 was the greatest day of my life, and today marks the greatest year of my life. When I randomly grabbed these boxing gloves before I entered the reception, I thought it was a joke, but looking back on it now I think it’s much more symbolic then I realized… cause in order to even be at a place where we could marry, we had to fight for it.” Henrie continued, “When we met, Maria and I both knew that the goal of getting to know one another was to see if we were meant to marry…. The goal was not to hook up or chill… and that meant we had to do things different then the “swipe right” culture we live in… and that took work, self-restraint and a genuine love which always puts the other person first…. The result of this process: I found my best friend first… and that’s the women I am honored to journey through life, ready to battle anything that faces us, until death do we part… here’s to many more — and it’s my prayer that we can all find our best friends to journey through life with!”

Dating with the intentions of marriage is so counter-cultural. Movies, TV and music all scream that teenagers need to be sexually active from a young age and have as many partners as they want, often treating marriage as a coincidental byproduct rather than a worthy goal for relationships. The idea of “self-restraint” as Henrie puts it is a breath of fresh air, and something to be encouraged for young people, and judging by the comments on his photo, his fanbase agrees. Henrie’s 2.2 million followers posted numerous responses, citing his note as “inspiring” and “encouraging”, and many stating that they were praying for his marriage. Henrie is a committed Catholic and frequently shares him and his wife’s faith on social media.

Movieguide® commends David Henrie’s positive message, and we’re wishing him and his wife a happy anniversary, and many more to come.
