How Will This Tragedy Impact NCIS: ORIGINS’ Story?
By Movieguide® Contributor
The new NCIS: ORIGINS trailer provides some insight into how prevalent the tragic death of Gibbs’ wife and daughter will be in the show’s story.
While Gibbs’ wife, Shannon, and his daughter, Kelly, will be portrayed by new actors on the show, Gibbs’ jubilant relationship and the impact of their death will remain the same. His tragic backstory has always had a major impact on the character, and NCIS: ORIGINS will look at how he dealt with these wounds when they were still fresh.
The NCIS: ORIGINS trailer already provides some insight into how this tragedy will affect Gibbs as he is shown failing a psych exam shortly after the death of his family, causing his ability as an agent to be questioned by his new team. Because Gibbs’ mental state is front-and-center in the trailer, it appears it may be constantly present throughout the first season.
If this is the case, it will be a markedly different look at the character than ever seen on the original show where Gibbs is hardly even shown letting his emotion get the best of him. While those working on the show have said that ORIGINS will provide a different look at Gibbs, the mental health aspect is one of the first tangible ways this could be true.
“They don’t know as much as they think they do,” showrunner Mark D. Cross said of NCIS fans. “Seeing Gibbs arrive at NIS on Day 1, and seeing how Gibbs became Gibbs…? You will realize there’s so much to explore.”
“It gives Gibbs a different kind of shading than we’ve seen before as a character,” added co-showrunner Gina Lucita Montreal.
Fans of NCIS have less than two weeks to wait until they can finally experience Gibbs in a new light. The special two-hour first episode of NCIS: ORIGINS airs on Monday, Oct. 14 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Those interested in viewing the trailer can do so here.

With the fall TV season just around the corner, here’s everything we currently know about the highly anticipated NCIS: ORIGINS.
The show will offer viewers a look at Gibbs in his early years as an NCIS agent. Though he is only a newly minted special agent, Gibbs is hand-picked to join the ragtag team led by Mike Franks at the budding Camp Pendleton office.
The show will feature well-established characters including Gibbs, Mike Franks and Gibb’s father, while also introducing new faces such as special agent Lala Dominguez and special agent Vera Strickland. Though not appearing in the show, Mark Harmon will return to narrate as an older Gibbs reflecting on his younger years.
