New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston explained how, despite being in a season of trials, he finds the strength to persevere because of the Bible’s wisdom.

“One of my mental coaches, Jim Brogan, he always told me and we always repeat it: If success is in the struggle, you know, we have to continue to endure. One of my favorite Bible verses is, ‘Count it all as joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. And let that perseverance have its perfect work so you can be complete, lacking nothing.’ And I think that this team is just in a season where we’re enduring certain trials,” Winston told the press after a tough overtime loss to the Lions, quoting James 1:2-4.

As for the Giants, they have faced incredible setbacks this season due to multiple injuries that have left key players on both offense and defense sitting out. Winston, for example, is filling in for quarterback Jaxson Dart who has sat out for two weeks due to a concussion.

After his first start of the season on Nov. 16, Winston shared his joy to be back on the field leading a team, despite losing to the Green Bay Packers.

“I was so grateful. I really wanted to win for these guys, man. How we dominated the line of scrimmage, we ran the ball effectively. We did some good things in the passing game,” Winston said. “[Interim head coach Mike Kafka] Kaf did an incredible job calling this game. I really wanted to win this one for us.”

Winston has long used the platform given to him by football to share his faith and spread positivity around the sport, encouraging players and viewers to put their foundation in the Lord, rather than something less secure like success.

“One thing about me,” Winston told Sports Spectrum in 2019, “is I always knew that my identity wasn’t in football, that it wasn’t in baseball. I knew that my identity always has been in Christ.”

This foundation in Christ has been important as his football career has not played out as he had hoped. Winning a Heisman trophy while in college before being the first overall draft pick in 2015, Winston has largely slipped to become a backup quarterback, rather than leading his own team. He started this season as the third string quarterback for the Giants but was picked to start over Russell Wilson after Dart suffered his concussion. For players without a foundation in Christ, this journeyman career may be unbearable, but Winston has taken it in stride because he does not find his value in his success.

Praise the Lord for Winston’s faith as his boldness to share his relationship with God with the masses, rather than keeping it to himself.
