‘Extremely Exciting’: Lucasfilm Announces THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU Movie

By Movieguide® Contributor

Jon Favreau is set to return to the STAR WARS universe with new movie THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau, who created THE MANDALORIAN series, said. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Details about the project are being kept secret for now, but it will follow characters Din Djarin and Grogu, who were introduced in THE MANDALORIAN.

A portion of the Movieguide® review for Season 1 of THE MANDALORIAN reads:

The cinematography and editing in THE MANDALORIAN are excellent and blend seamlessly with the appearance and style of the STAR WARS movies. The plot and character development sometimes leave a little to be desired. As an action series, THE MANDALORIAN definitely delivers, and the title character quickly becomes more relatable. There’s lots of action violence, betrayals and plot twists in THE MANDALORIAN, but little objectionable content. However, the series has a New Age pagan worldview mixed with some positive moral, redemptive elements. So, MOVIEGUIDE® generally advises caution for older children.

“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni [Lucasfilm chief creative officer] have ushered into STAR WARS two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” said Kathleen Kennedy, head of LucasFilm.

THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU isn’t the only STAR WARS project in the works.

StarWars.com reported that the movie will “lead Lucasfilm’s ongoing feature-development slate, including films helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the upcoming fourth season of THE MANDALORIAN:

After being delayed by the writers’ and actors’ strikes earlier this year, filming for THE MANDALORIAN Season 4 is set to begin next February.

Initially, the show was set to begin production in September. However, the dual strikes delayed the show indefinitely. Multiple sources have now confirmed that Lucasfilm is currently working on preproduction for the show as it looks to begin filming after the holiday season.

If Season 4 follows the same timeline as Season 3, the series’ latest installment will likely hit Disney+ by Summer 2025. The cast spent six months filming for Season 3 – meaning Season 4 would wrap in August – and the season spent a full year in post-production before it was released.

While it seems obvious that Disney would continue to produce its most popular series, there was some debate about whether the series would see a fourth season or if it would be turned into a movie. The movie option was being heavily considered during the strikes as it was unclear how long the delay in production would last. However, multiple inside sources have since confirmed that the next chapter of THE MANDALORIAN will return as Season 4 of the show.
