CinemaCon attendees got a first look at Disney’s upcoming THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU.
“Director Jon Favreau took the CinemaCon stage to debut the opening 17 minutes of the film, which saw Mando infiltrate a secret meeting of Empire sympathizers and blow up massive AT-AT walkers on a snowy planet,” Variety reported. “The bounty hunter shot, stabbed and flamethrower-ed his way through the base full of Snowtroopers, with Grogu helping along the way. The Empire leader sends out a recon droid, which meets an explosive end when Grogu uses the Force on it.”
In the rest of the footage, Mando and Grogu use a bomb to bring down an AT-AT, completing their mission. The pair fly back to the New Republic base, where they report to Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver.
“She chastises them for killing their Empire target without getting any intel but hands them their next mission: rescue Rotta the Hutt from rival gangsters. They board a shiny, brand-new ship and fly off into space,” the outlet concluded.

Favreau spoke to the audience about his passion for the franchise, sharing that he hopes his “joy and love of STAR WARS translates to a new generation,” per Deadline.
He also revealed that THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU will include “over 49 minutes of expanded aspect ratio sequences created specifically for IMAX and other large-format theaters,” as well as practical sets, stop-motion animation and more.
In a 2025 interview, Favreau elaborated on how he and his team created the world of THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU for the screen.
“We really tried to deliver cinema quality effects and storytelling even on the small screen [in Disney+ show THE MANDALORIAN]…but now since we’re an IMAX release, all the sudden your aspect ratio changes and also making sure that the visual effects have the depth and complexity to hold up to big screen viewing,” he explained. “As a filmmaker it’s a wonderful opportunity to open the world up in many ways.”
THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU was one of the most highly-anticipated movies featured at this year’s CinemaCon; Favreau was even chosen to headline the event’s annual Creative Community luncheon.
“Anticipation for a new STAR WARS movie on the big screen is sky high, making this an incredible way to kick off the summer movie season,” Cinema United president and CEO Michael O’Leary said of the decision to spotlight Favreau and his movie. “This event presents a great opportunity to hear from Jon Favreau, one of the most talented filmmakers working today. I want to thank Jon, Matt Belloni for hosting, as well as the entire teams at Disney and Lucasfilm for helping ensure this luncheon will be the talk of CinemaCon.”
THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU premieres May 22.
