Meta Developing Labels to Identify AI-Generated Content

By Movieguide® Contributor

Meta is developing labels that would allow users to identify images and content created using AI.

Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer and reverse engineer, shared a screenshot of what the label is expected to say, “The creator or Meta said that this content was created or edited with AI.” The in-app message will help users differentiate between real and AI-generated images.

The screenshot also suggests that users will get a brief explanation on how AI images are created to raise awareness about the technology.

This step to label images comes after AI companies—Meta, Google, Microsoft and OpenAI—pledged to implement safety measures on AI-generated content, including watermarks.

“These commitments are a promising step, but we have a lot more work to do together,” President Biden said about these companies.

Paluzzi shared more screenshots about Meta’s other upcoming AI tools, including an “AI assistant” which is “available 24/7 to help you be more productive.”

While Meta has yet to make specific comments about the technology, the company shared that it believes an open approach to AI is the best practice for the industry.

“Our open source approach promotes transparency and access. We know that while AI has brought huge advancements to society, it also comes with risk. We are committed to building responsibly and are providing a number of resources to help those who use Llama 2 do so too,” the company said.

Meta’s step towards labeling AI comes immediately after the release of Llama 2, Meta and Microsoft’s language model.

Movieguide® previously reported on AI:

“The danger of training AI to be woke—in other words, lie—is deadly,” Musk warned.

The Daily Wire reports that Musk has approached top “artificial intelligence researchers in recent weeks about forming a new research lab to develop an alternative to ChatGPT,” including Igor Babuschkin, a top researcher who worked on both Alphabet’s DeepMind AI unit and at OpenAI.

ChatGPT is the first mainstream AI tool available, and Musk co-founded its parent company, OpenAI, in 2015.

However, since cutting ties with OpenAI, Musk has frequently criticized ChatGPT, citing it as an example of “training AI to be woke.”

“OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it ‘Open’ AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google,” he tweeted.
