NBA Legend Turns to This Verse for Strength
By Movieguide® Contributor
Multi-time NBA Champion Steph Curry is opening up about why he has the Bible verse Philippians 4:13 in his Instagram bio.
“I mean, that’s my source of strength and determination and my purpose, really,” Curry told Stephen Colbert. “Because, you know, like anything that you do in life is going to require that undying faith in yourself and the belief that you can conquer anything. And for me, you know, through Christ, I get my strength and I can do all things.”
“And so, when I was a freshman in college at Davidson College in North Carolina, my mom texted me before my first practice and she gave me a bunch of words of encouragement,” he continued. “Her favorite verse is Romans 8:28. So, she’s like you need to pick a verse that you can go to in your times of need and give you that inspiration. So, Philippians 4:13 was for me, and I still write it on my shoes to this day. Every pair of shoes. It’s just a great reminder. Obviously, you’re always searching for purpose and why you’re here and for me, that’s it.”
In addition to sharing his faith with millions, Curry and his wife, Ayesha, are also pillars of strength and hope within their community, launching the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation.
“When we launched Eat. Learn. Play. in 2019, we saw the tremendous need that existed in our adopted hometown of Oakland and set out to use our platform and resources to work to unlock the full potential of the kids in our community,” the couple said.
The foundation supports “children’s well-being through access to nutritious meals, quality reading resources and opportunities to play and be active—because everyone deserves the chance to live a happy, healthy childhood.”
Currently, they’re committing “$25 million to support tutoring and literacy programs in Oakland schools. Every child deserves the chance to succeed, and we believe individualized support is key.”

Ayesha Curry, actress and wife of basketball star Stephen Curry, announced the news in an interview with TODAY.
“We just felt like…someone was missing. I’d be loading up the car, or setting the dinner table, and I’d be like, ‘I feel like we shouldn’t call it at three.’ And he was like, ‘Music to my ears,’” she said.
Curry shared that her husband wants to have a large family.
“He would want ten kids… easy for him to say, right? We decided to take that next step and everything’s just feeling so balanced, so we’re really excited,” she added.
