THE CHOSEN cast and crew returned to Utah earlier this month to film Season 6 of the beloved faith-based TV show.

“The attention to detail and the amount of time and, I believe, yes, love and honor and reverence and respect that went into building this set, is what we’re trying to bring to the filming of these scenes,” series creator, writer and director Dallas Jenkins told KSL TV about Season 6.

THE CHOSEN returned to Goshen, Utah, where it first started filming in Season 2. B.J. Forman, the coordinator of the art department, said that Goshen is still the perfect place to capture Jesus’ story.

“We walked in here for Season 2 and it was overwhelming,” Forman explained. “Compared to the postage stamp that we shot in Season 1, this was overwhelming. And as gorgeous as it was, it was a blank canvas; we brought it to life.”

Jenkins revealed that Season 6 will portray 24 hours of Jesus’ life, leading up to the crucifixion. However, those 24 hours will take a lot longer to film that previous seasons.

“Most of it is at night. So, it means we’re shooting all through the night. It’s exhausting. This season is an 86-day shoot. It’s almost 20 days longer than any other season we’ve ever done,” Jenkins told the news outlet. “It’s the physical challenges, the logistical challenges that make it even harder.”

One of those challenges is capturing the death of Jesus.

“And I think that’s OK. I think maybe God wants it that way. I think we are supposed to suffer and struggle a little bit. I think it’s the least we can do to capture this,” Jenkins said.

Jonathan Roumie opened up about the emotional toll Season 6 has already taken on him.

“It’s brutal. This is the most difficult thing I think I’ve ever done,” the actor who plays Jesus revealed. “It’s the most difficult season. It’s the most difficult role, and this being the most difficult role in the most difficult season, with the physicality that is expected, that I feel is expected, and that ultimately we will portray during Christ’s suffering and death — His passion — I don’t know anything else that could be more challenging to me as a performer.”

In a YouTube video posted by Next Season, Roumie revealed that he’s already starting to lose weight because he has “to look the part on the cross.”

As filming the last hours before Jesus’ death continues, the cast and crew know that the challenges that come with this season will be worth it. No release date has been announced.
