Tom Holland Taking a Year Off From Acting

Sorry Spider-Man fans, Tom Holland will be taking a break from acting.  The actor shared that after his time filming the new series “The Crowded Room” he needs to focus on making his mental health a priority.

“The Crowded Room” is based off a 1981 novel called “The Minds of Billy Milligan.”  This story has to do with a “shocking crime” that was committed, and an investigators journey to solve the mystery.  Due to the weightiness of the topic, Tom Holland stated that filming was a “tough time” and he had to explore “certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before” which he shared in an interview with Extra.

Holland stated “There did come a time where I was like, I need to have a break.  I disappeared, I went to Mexico for a week and had some time on a beach and laid low, and I’m now taking a year off and that is a result of how difficult this show was.”

This isn’t the first time that an actor has struggled mentally with the role they had to portray.

Buzzfeed shared that many actors including Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway, Christina Applegate, and Jake Gyllenhaal have all struggled mentally after portraying certain roles, usually pertaining to heavy topics or dark subject matters.  It hasn’t been unusual for them to then take a break or need therapy because of what they experienced. There was an on-set psychologist on the set for “The Crowded Room” who helped support Holland through his feelings.

Now Tom Holland is spending time doing activities he enjoys outside of acting.  “I’ve done a little bit of traveling.  I had an amazing time.  I’ve been seeing my family.  “I’ve been playing golf.  I’ve been going to the garden center and buying plants and doing my best to keep them alive and all that sort of stuff.”

“The Crowded Room” can be viewed on Apple + beginning June 9th.
