Why Jamie Foxx Says God ‘Blessed’ Him With a Stroke
By Movieguide® Contributor
As the title of his new Netflix special JAMIE FOXX: WHAT HAD HAPPENED WAS… teases, the actor reveals more about the mystery illness he suffered last April.
The Oscar winner shared that he suffered a stroke that led to him being in a coma for 20 days.
Demecos Chambers, who was in the audience for the taping of the special, revealed that Foxx was “literally seconds and moments away from death” before being taken to the hospital.
“It was just pure exhaustion. His body was just exhausted due to him getting up there in age, and his body just faltering out on him,” Chambers told PEOPLE.

“He basically passed out in an elevator, and he thought he woke up a couple hours later,” Chambers added. “Well, he was actually in a coma and didn’t wake up until a few weeks later.”
Chambers also recalled while the father-of-two was in a coma, one of his daughters would play their favorite song on guitar every day.
“[H]e said that’s the only thing that he could recall hearing in his sleep, and it brought him essentially out of his coma,” Chambers said.
When Foxx woke up from the coma he “had to start from day one,” Chambers said.
“… I went to hell and back,” Foxx said in an Instagram post. “And my road to recovery had some potholes as well. But I’m coming back. And I’m able to work.”
The Movieguide® Teddy Bear and Grace Award® winner shared how the experience has brought him closer to God.
“It’s been an unexpected dark journey… but I can see the light…” he posted on Instagram. “I’m thankful to everyone that reached out and sent well wishes and prayers…if you didn’t know…GOD IS GOOD…all day every day.”
“It’s about blessings. God blessed me with His talent. He blessed me with all this money and this fame. And when I forgot about God, He blessed me with a stroke,” Foxx said in his Netflix show.
“[C]an’t wait for everyone to experience the vibe that we had. It was like going to church… We laughed… we had a few tears… but last, but not least we celebrated life… And second chances… cannot wait Make sure you check it December 10th,” the comedian wrote in a post promoting WHAT HAD HAPPENED.
