A MOUTHFUL OF AIR

What You Need To Know:

A MOUTHFUL OF AIR follows a mother trying to manage depression and a newborn. Julie is an author of children’s books who finally has a child. Her child is a beautiful baby boy, and her husband is very happy. Though Julie loves her child, she’s dealing with depression and tries to take her life. Julie is saved and starts taking anti-depressants. This seems to relieve her depression. However, when she becomes pregnant again, she decides, for the baby’s sake, not to take the medication. Will Julie be able to persevere without the anti-depressants?

A MOUTHFUL OF AIR is a depressing, humanist movie that doesn’t offer viewers much hope. The movie deals with issues of abuse, depression and suicide. Sadly, there’s no final resolution or hopeful message. So, people who deal with these issues probably won’t want to watch a movie like this, but neither will general audiences, much less families. Amanda Seyfried gives a heartbreaking performance as the mother. As usual, Paul Giamatti delivers a compelling performance as her doctor. However, A MOUTHFUL OF AIR contains brief foul language, lying and deception.

Julie is a young mother who has one baby. The baby is happy and joyful, but Julie’s unhappy. Julie has even created a colorful world for her family. As a children’s book author, she has a character that animates their life. Even so, Julie decides to try to take her life but fails. When this happens, her sister-in-law, who was already on her way for a play date, shows up and calls 911. Julie goes to the hospital and ends up seeing a psychologist. The psychologist asks if this is a recent depression due to Post-Partum Depression, or is this something she’s always felt? Julie reveals she has always considered taking her own life.

Julie is put on anti-depressants. Weeks and months pass, and Julie feels she is starting to see color again and more joy. However, when she and her husband find out she’s pregnant again, Julie doesn’t want to take the anti-depressants anymore, in order to protect the child. Will Julie be okay even though she doesn’t have her medicines to help her?
