What You Need To Know:

In ADDICTED TO LOVE, Sam (played by Matthew Broderick), an astrophysics graduate student, travels to New York to spy on the his ex-lover, Linda, and her new boyfriend Anton. There, he meets Maggie, Anton’s former girlfriend played by Meg Ryan. Together, Sam and Maggie take revenge on Linda and Anton, and fall in love with each other in the process.

As the sophisticated New York collage artist, Meg Ryan plays a woman too grim and bent on revenge to generate much sympathy among viewers, whereas Matthew Broderick’s air-headed academic genius seems lost in the futility of trying to spy on his former girlfriend. When asked to define love, Maggie states that they believe that people walk around with an internal emptiness, until they find love, which fills the void. Containing numerous romantic twists and turns, the film is funny, but ultimately empty as two lovers find Hollywood-style love without acknowledging the love of the only one who can fill the void: Jesus Christ. Only once in ADDICTED TO LOVE does one of the characters call on God. The problem with ADDICTED TO LOVE is that the Author of love is almost entirely left out of the story. ADDICTED TO LOVE seems more like ADDICTED TO PAST RELATIONSHIPS TO THE POINT OF UNHEALTHY BEHAVIOR.

More Detail:

In ADDICTED TO LOVE, Sam (Matthew Broderick) leads a sheltered academic life as a star graduate astrophysics student who converts the university’s huge telescope at noon every day into a huge set of binoculars to bring his girlfriend, Linda (Kelly Preston), into focus. A country school teacher, Linda pauses in her daily routine to greet her boyfriend as he peers at her through the telescope at noon exactly.

One day, Linda gets a job as a teacher in New York and leaves for the city. Crestfallen, Sam follows her to New York. Successful in discovering where she lives, he is severely shocked to find out that she has taken a New York lover, the Frenchman Anton (Tcheky Karyo). Sam sets up an amateur telescope from the condemned building across the street, to spy on her trysts with the Anton. Sam believes that their relationship is winding down, and he wants to be there to win her back.

Meanwhile, Anton’s former girlfriend, Maggie (Meg Ryan), a sophisticated New York collage artist, wants revenge. She conceives a similar scheme, except that, instead of looking at her former boyfriend through a telescope, she bugs his apartment so that she can hear his every word. Together, Maggie and Sam can see and hear every word and gesture which Linda and Anton exchange. They become a Peeping Tom and Peeping Sarah.

Sam and Maggie conceive a plan to sabotage Linda and Anton’s relationship. Maggie pays a street performer to have his monkey jump onto Anton as he passes through a park, forcing Anton to explain to Linda how he got lipstick on his collar. Sam and Maggie also pay little boys to squirt expensive perfume on Anton as he crosses through the same park the next day, and he has to explain this to Linda. Finally, Maggie scatters cockroaches on the restaurant floor just as the New York Times food critic is dining, which ruins the Anton’s reputation and his business. Loyal girlfriend that she is, Linda promises Anton that she’d move into a cardboard shack with him if he loses his business, which prompts him to propose to her. The question remains: will Sam win Linda back, and will Maggie win Anton back?

Containing numerous surprise romantic twists and turns, ADDICTED TO LOVE is funny but empty. Anton says essentially the same thing.

The Bible says that love is not that we loved God, but that God loved us, and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice to take away our sins (1John 4:10). God fills the void that we all have inside. Only once in ADDICTED TO LOVE does one of the characters call on God (Anton after being barred from his own restaurant), and when he does, it is only a passing prayer, soon forgotten. The problem with ADDICTED TO LOVE is that the Author of love is almost entirely left out of the story. It is His pleasure to lead and guide all mankind to their real mates and sustains all lasting relationships. Furthermore, when we lose love, God is able to grant us the strength to continue. Sam and Maggie chose revenge. ADDICTED TO LOVE seems more like ADDICTED TO PAST RELATIONSHIPS TO THE POINT OF UNHEALTHY BEHAVIOR.
