Produced by the men who made THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, SAY IT ISN’T SO is another depraved comic spin on the classic boy meets girl love story. This time, the money-grubbing parents of the beautiful young girl, Jo, fool the lovesick young couple into believing that they are actually brother and sister. This happens when the young man, an adopted dogcatcher named Gilly, hires a detective to find his birth mother. Jo relocates to Oregon, where she decides to marry the richest man in town. When Gilly learns that the detective has made a mistake, he pursues Jo before she can tie the knot.

SAY IT ISN’T SO is only slightly less outrageous than THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY. It’s also a lot less funny, although its romance between the leads is more wholesome. The romance slightly mitigates the obnoxious, offensive quality of the rest of the story, which is filled with scatological humor, very crude sexual humor, jokes about a double amputee, and jokes about stroke victims. What it doesn’t mitigate, however, is the movie’s sometimes cynical attitude toward Jo and Gilly’s romantic relationship, which the filmmakers have tried to make as corny as possible

This time, the money-grubbing parents of the beautiful young girl, Jo, fool the lovesick young couple into believing that they are actually brother and sister. This happens when the young man, an adopted dogcatcher named Gilly, hires a detective to find his birth mother. Jo relocates to Oregon, where she decides to marry the richest man in town. When Gilly learns that the detective has made a terrible mistake, he frantically pursues Jo before she can tie the knot. Along his journey, he gets help from a double amputee named Dig, played by Orlando Jones of DOUBLE TAKE.

SAY IT ISN’T SO is only slightly less outrageous than THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY. It’s also a lot less funny. Unlike Mary in that movie, Jo presents a sweeter, more innocent demeanor. There’s also a more wholesome quality to the relationship between her and Gilly. These things slightly mitigate the obnoxious, offensive quality of the rest of the story, which is filled with scatological humor, very crude sexual humor, jokes about a double amputee, and sick jokes about stroke victims. What they don’t mitigate, however, is the movie’s sometimes cynical attitude toward Jo and Gilly’s romantic relationship, which the filmmakers have tried to make as corny as possible in several scenes.

The acting in this movie is only passable. The worst may be Sally Field’s stupid portrayal of Jo’s white trash mother. Even this kind of comedy requires at least some semblance of verbal wit and comical physical grace. SAY IT ISN’T SO lacks both.
