THE SONG OF BERNADETTE

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

THE SONG OF BERNADETTE is a classic movie from 1943. It opens with the inscription, “For those who believe, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not, no explanation is possible.” Bernadette, a sickly 14-year-old French girl, sees visions of someone she calls “the lady.” Her behavior stirs controversy in both religious and political circles. As time passes, her trips to visit “the lady” become a pilgrimage for a growing group of onlookers. One visit results in the finding of a healing spring.

THE SONG OF BERNADETTE is extremely well made. It presents a strong contrast between those who believe in God and those who don’t. There’s a disturbing element where some characters believe suffering is a requirement for heaven. Jesus paid the full price for our salvation, whether or not we experience any suffering. God honored Mary by selecting her, but Mary didn’t die for our sins. Neither is she an intermediary for divine communication. Jesus taught us to pray directly to “Our Father who art in heaven.” With this understood, THE SONG OF BERNADETTE is a remarkable, faith-filled movie.

Content:

(CC, BB, M) Strong Christian, moral worldview, but with a very Catholic twist stressing faith in Mary, the mother of Jesus; no foul language, violence, sex, or nudity; no alcohol, smoking, or drug use; and, some extreme envy rebuked and repented.

More Detail:

THE SONG OF BERNADETTE is a very long classic movie from 1943 featuring Jennifer Jones in the role of Bernadette, a French peasant girl who sees visions of Mary, the mother of Jesus. These visions lead to considerable religious and political controversy and some miraculous healings.

The movie opens with the inscription “For those who believe no explanation is necessary; for those who do not no explanation is possible.” Bernadette, a sickly 14-year-old French girl, sees visions of someone she calls “the lady.” Her behavior stirs controversy both in religious and political circles. As time passes, her trips to visit “the lady” become a pilgrimage for a growing group of onlookers. One visit results in the finding of a spring whose waters prove miraculous for some who come.

THE SONG OF BERNADETTE is extremely well made and presents a strong contrast between those who believe in God and the vision against those who do not believe in either. Some in the church, the political realm and the scientific realm strongly oppose what they see as the resulting silliness.

There is a disturbing element where some in the movie believe suffering is a requirement to get to heaven. While Jesus suffered, and He said many of His followers would suffer as well, it is NOT a requirement for salvation. Jesus paid the full price for our salvation whether or not we experience suffering. By his grace, He will give us the ability to survive suffering should we experience it. We are not to fear it, but neither are we to purposely inflict it on ourselves as one nun does in the movie.

God honored Mary by selecting her as the mother of Jesus, but Mary is not Lord and didn’t die for the forgiveness of our sins. Neither is she an intermediary for communication with God. Jesus taught us to pray directly to “Our Father who art in heaven.” With this understood, THE SONG OF BERNADETTE is a remarkable 20th Century Fox movie. It is another example of a major American studio making a healthy profit on a movie boldly promoting faith in God. Jennifer Jones won the Best Actress Academy Award for her role.
