RISEN is about a Roman soldier and non-believer, Clavius, who leads the soldiers who crucified Jesus and guarded His tomb. When the soldiers guarding the tomb fall asleep and Christ’s body goes missing, Pontius Pilate orders Clavius to investigate. Clavius and his aide try to bribe one man into giving them information about the whereabouts of the disciples, but he refuses. They then interrogate Mary Magdalene, who tells them they can’t find the body because Jesus has risen from the dead. After more and more of Christ’s followers come to them, Clavius wonders if the Christian message could be true. Will Clavius literally see the truth?
RISEN is a dramatic, epic movie about Jesus Christ rising from the dead. The movie is well done, with excellent suspense, great acting and superb production values. RISEN has a strong Christian, biblical worldview promoting the Gospel of Jesus Christ, including the Resurrection. It tells a powerful story with a realistic portrayal of Jesus Christ and His Gospel. RISEN is a really good movie to show non-believers and skeptics who mistakenly don’t believe that Christianity is true.
(CCC, BBB, VV, N, AA, M) Very strong Christian, biblical, evangelical worldview with Jesus rising from the dead, Jesus ascending to Heaven, telling the disciples to go into all the world to preach the Gospel, Lord’s Prayer recited, and two miracles occur, plus character prays to false gods but has a transformation of heart; no obscenities nor profanities; strong violence includes war scene, characters fight with swords, man kills a man, but viewers don’t see it and just hear it, character hits the knees of those crucified to let them die faster, and characters stab Jesus in order to make Him die sooner when He’s on the Cross, with some blood; no sex; upper male nudity and characters in underwear; drinking and drunkenness; no smoking or drug use; and, greed, power hungry character, Pharisees pay others to lie.
RISEN is about a Roman soldier and non-believer, who hunts for Jesus Christ’s body, not realizing that Jesus has risen from the dead. RISEN is almost like the follow up movie to Mel Gibson’s THE PASSION, with some war violence and killing, but with a powerful Christian, biblical worldview promoting the reality of Jesus Christ’s physical resurrection.
Clavius is a Roman Military Tribune often called by Roman Governor Pontius Pilate to lead missions. In fact, Clavius made sure the Roman soldiers crucified Jesus in the correct manner. The Pharisees come to Pilate and tell him that the soldiers need to watch Christ’s tomb, because of the prophecy that Jesus will rise from the grave. The Pharisees obviously do not believe that Jesus was the Messiah who will Rise again, but rather believe that Christ’s followers will steal his body in order to make the prophecy seem true.
When Clavius sends some soldiers to the tomb, they fall asleep on the job. Next day, the soldiers say that Christ’s body is not in the tomb any more. Now, Clavius is at fault for not making sure the job was done to protect the body. Pilate tells Clavius he must find Jesus’ body, so Clavius decides to dig up all the dead bodies from the past few days.
Even the stench of dead bodies does not faze the hard heart of Clavius. Lucius is learning and assisting Clavius. He finds one man who knows about Jesus’ followers. The two bribe the man to give them info. When they find Mary Magdalene, she tells them they can’t find Jesus body because He has risen from the dead. After more and more followers come to Clavius, he wonders if this message could be true. Will Clavius literally see the truth?
RISEN is a dramatic, epic movie about Jesus Christ rising from the dead. The movie is well done, with excellent suspense, great acting and excellent production values. This is not a movie for a younger audience, but is more for teenagers and adults. There is war and violence. Therefore, caution should be applied.
Some elements of the movie toward the end could have been cut, but overall, RISEN is a very well done movie. It tells a powerful story with a realistic portrayal of Jesus Christ’s resurrection, with a strong Christian, biblical worldview. RISEN is a really good movie to bring a secular friend, because it shows a skeptical non-believer coming to faith.
That said, like almost every movie about Jesus Christ, the movie captures the essence of the biblical story while dramatizing it with some added dramatic elements. For instance, a Roman watch was four guards who would have rotated every four hours, but dramatic structure requires focusing attention on the main characters. Also, Mary Magdalene was most likely not a prostitute, but the tale of her being one is not likely, but not substantiated in the Bible. Even so, RISEN is a powerful, evangelistic story of the Resurrection; so, tell your friends the rest of the story in the Bible, or ask them to read the Bible.
