Hollywood Set Designer Who Left Homosexuality Reveals the 2 Women Who Impacted His Faith

By Movieguide® Contributor

On Becket Cook’s journey from gay atheist to Christian there were two women that stand out as a catalyst for bringing him to Christ— a Christian model and his sister-in-law Kim Cook.

“It was literally the first time I had met a Christian in Los Angeles,” Cook says of meeting model Joy Durham-Schaefer at a video shoot when he was working as a successful set and production designer.

Durham-Schaefer appeared on THE BECKET COOK SHOW to discuss her journey of faith and how a leap of faith concerning her then boyfriend, now husband Frankie, impacted Cook.

Cook remembers learning that soon after the model came to faith in Christ that she broke up with Frankie because he was not a Christian (later she reveals that he did come to faith before they were married).

“It really touched me and kind of freaked me out in a way,” Cook said. “[Frankie] told me the story of you breaking up with him and he said you collapsed on the floor and you were weeping. And he went to hug you and he said he could feel like the Holy Spirit on you. He sensed something supernatural was going on.”

Cook went on to say how that led him to rethink Christianity.

“I remember when he told me that story it was, maybe, the first spark of me thinking… ‘There must be something real to this kind of Christianity-thing.’ …It definitely planted a seed in me,” Cook said.

Another “spark” that led Cook to salvation were the prayers of his sister-in-law Kim Cook. Cook told her brother-in-law what compelled her to pray for him.

“I was doing a Bible study on Revelation and…that all of a sudden became my concern that if the rapture happens, you are not going to go,” Cook told him. “I just remember being so burdened that you would not be in eternity with me.”

“God wants us to come with those desperate prayers of petition and bear everything to him,” she states. “And then let him go to work…and then I have to trust [His] timing.”

Her prayers were not in vain because Cook would have what he describes a “Damascus moment” when he came to salvation in 2009 at a Los Angeles Church.

Movieguide® previously reported on Cook’s journey of faith:

Relationship after relationship failed. Meanwhile, Becket was more successful than ever working as a Hollywood production designer.

“I was doing covers for Vogue and for Harper’s Bazaar, and I worked with a lot of pop stars like Katy Perry and Paris Hilton and Oprah, like everyone you can imagine I worked with them. And I also started my own men’s fashion line.”

His life was seemingly perfect. His clothes were selling in all the major markets and he was going to all the fashion shows and after parties.

One night in Paris it all came crashing down.

“I was kind of looking out over the crowd. It just struck me so profoundly. I was like, is that all there is to life? Just going to parties for the rest of my life is that all? Is this what it’s all about? I really started to panic that night, I was overwhelmed with a sense of emptiness,” Cook said.

Eventually he met a group of Christians at a coffee shop who invited him to church, hesitant at first he decided to attend, radically changing his life:

“It was the first time I had really heard the gospel and understood it… And before he left, he invited people to get prayed with on the side of the church.”

“I go up to this guy, a stranger and I say, ‘I don’t know what I believe, but I’m here.’ And he said, ‘Okay, let me pray for you.’ And he laid hands on me and prayed for me. It seemed really intense and long. And I just remember thinking, why does this straight dude love me so much? Because it seems so loving what he was saying and praying.”

“And all of a sudden, the Holy Spirit is just like (MAKES NOISE) – like floods me, and God has revealed Himself to me in that moment. And He’s like, ‘You’re now adopted into my kingdom. Welcome.’ And I was like, ‘Whoa!’ (LAUGHS) And I just like started bawling, hysterically balling.”

“And I knew, in that moment, I knew into the core of my being that being gay was no longer who I was. But I didn’t care. I had just met Jesus Christ.”
