Tyler Perry Lands Deal to Write, Direct and Produce for Netflix

By Movieguide® Contributor

Tyler Perry has secured a deal with Netflix to write, direct and produce multiple movies for the streaming platform.

“Perry is already working with Netflix on several titles, including SIX TRIPLE EIGHT, a World War II period film about the only all-Black, all-female battalion stationed overseas in the war effort. Kerry Washington will lead an ensemble cast that also includes Oprah Winfrey. He has also set the legal drama MEA CULPA, which stars Kelly Rowland as a criminal defense attorney who takes on the case of an artist who may or may not have murdered his girlfriend,” the Hollywood Reporter wrote.

“Netflix has been an incredible partner to work with, and so is Amazon. It’s been really, really, really incredible, and that’s all I’ll say about it,” Perry said at the Bloomberg Media’s Screentime conference.

“The multi-hyphenate creator’s new agreement with Netflix was signed separately from his four-picture deal with Amazon Studios, inked in 2022. Amazon has announced the first two films under that agreement: BLACK, WHITE & BLUE, a police brutality drama, and DIVORCE IN THE BLACK, which focuses on a broken marriage. Perry is also the subject of the documentary MAXINE’S BABY, which chronicles his unlikely rise from homeless playwright to billionaire media mogul,” Variety reported.

The next movie on Perry’s docket, MAXINE’S BABY: THE TYLER PERRY STORY, is “a documentary directed for Amazon Studios and Bekele Films by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz, which has been set to world premiere as AFI Fest’s centerpiece film on October 27, at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Reps for the always-busy multi-hyphenate are WME and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole,” according to Deadline.

AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale stated, “Tyler Perry is a creative force of nature – a multi-hyphenate who forged his own path to seismic impact in the world of storytelling while also inspiring the next generation to follow in his footsteps MAXINE’S BABY is an epic celebration of a modern maverick, and it is AFI’s honor to shine a proper light upon Mr. Perry and the film at AFI Fest.”

“We are honored to premiere MAXINE’S BABY at AFI Fest,” co-directors Bekele and Ortiz said. “Working on this film for the past decade has been a life-changing journey for the both of us. Getting intimately acquainted with the man behind the icon while witnessing the transformative impact of Mr. Perry’s work within various communities has been truly awe-inspiring. We hope this film is more than a road-to-success story, but rather, a meditation on healing, unconditional love, and an inspiration to audiences.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Perry:

Producer, director, actor, screenwriter and author Tyler Perry shared an inspirational message about overcoming anxiety on PRAISE ON TBN.

“So, what do you do with anxiety?” Perry began. “You climb and maintain. You pray, you maintain. You worship and you pray.”

“All you have to do to get rid of anxiety is pray and worship,” Perry continued…

“It’s a very difficult place when you know that you’ve got anxiety all over you,” Perry continued. “So, as I look at this text and I see Isaac wondering is he the sacrifice, I came here to tell you that you are not the sacrifice. God did not bring you this far to leave you. You are not about to die. You are not about to lose everything. You are not the sacrifice.”
