On Sunday, Jets quarterback Justin Fields was benched after the team “failed to score on five of six possessions, only managing a field goal and marred by sloppy play,” per CBS Sports.
In a post-game interview, Fields revealed he was surprised but understood his coach’s decision to bench him.
“Yes, frustrating, for sure. We all got to be better. Me, O-line, receivers, everybody. Surprised that I got pulled a little bit, but at the same time, I can’t be mad at the decision. It is what it is. It’s football. I’ve learned to not take anything personal. Coach AG, I think, wanted to see if there was a spark,” Fields told the media, via SNY.

However, Fields used the opportunity to shine a light on his faith in Christ.
“I’ve always asked God to give me an opportunity and a platform to spread His word, and sometimes it doesn’t play out the way you always plan it,” Fields declared. “I think the position I’m in right now is a great opportunity to spread that message and really let the world know how I feel about Him and how great He is.
“I’ve been through a lot in my career—especially my NFL career, college career—ups and downs,” he continued. “I know I’m probably at a low right now, and I think the old me would feel a certain type of way, but now my faith is so rooted in Christ that nothing can break me. That’s just what it is.”
“As far as my job goes here, I’m going to be the same. I’m going to come to work the same, I’m going to lead the same, and continue to spread that message of how good God is,” Fields added. “No matter what I go through in life, I know I’m strong enough to handle it. I know He’s strong enough to help me handle it. So, I just felt like this thing that’s happening right now is a great opportunity for me to spread His word and spread His love.”
In a post shared on his Instagram page, Fields wrote in the caption, “Never stop.”
But then he included the Bible verse, James 1:2-3, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
Fields may not start this upcoming week, as the Jets face the Cincinnati Bengals, but he isn’t as concerned about playing time as he is spreading the Gospel.
