Disney’s HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: THE MUSICAL: THE SERIES is coming to an end as the plot for season four is announced.
Season four of the show follows the East High Wildcats through their senior year. As they are prepping for a stage production of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR, Disney announces a fourth HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL will begin shooting at their high school.
“This will be our final, endgame season. This show brought the most extraordinary cast – and crew, and collaborators – to my life. To the fans who embraced our super-meta series, we ‘don’t not love you,’” showrunner Tim Federle wrote on Instagram.
“This series was always about found family, and making something you love with people you love. In other words, it was a tribute to theater kids,” Federle said. “I can’t wait for our dedicated fan base to watch this world-class cast take a final bow.”
The final season will feature original HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL cast members Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed, and Kaycee Stroh, who will play themselves as they get back into character for the movie-within-the-show.
Stars from the previous seasons, Joshua Bassett, Sofia Wylie, Dara Reneé, Julia Lester, Frankie Rodriguez, Kate Reinders, and Liamani Segura will return for the final season. The cast also includes recurring guests Kylie Cantrall, Matthew Sato, Caitlin Reilly, Vasthy Mompoint, Mark St. Cry, Matt Cornett, Larry Saperstein, Joe Serafini, Adrian Lyles, and Saylor Bell Curda.
Notable among the cast is Joshua Bassett who has been vocal about his faith since returning to Christianity at the beginning of this year. Bassett reaches a widely secular audience and has stayed firm in his proclamations despite heavy backlash from his fanbase.
Movieguide® previously reported on Bassett’s faith:
“I’d love to thank my Savior, Jesus Christ,” Bassett began. “There are a lot of people here who are burdened, broken-hearted, and have been beaten down by life. I’m here to tell you, for those of you who’ve lost hope, there’s a very real God who loves you more than you will ever possibly know.”
“His promise is peace, and my testimony is healing,” he continued. “Remember: forgive quickly, love freely and walk courageously.”
Bassett later posted about his win on Instagram, saying “love always wins in the end.”
After rejecting Christianity during his youth, Bassett returned to his faith earlier this year after two radical encounters with God. He was then baptized in mid-February, testifying about the incredible healing that can be found only in Jesus.
Since then, he has shared several faith-centered posts, including part of a song seemingly inspired by Matthew 16:26. The snippet starts, “gain the whole world just to lose who we were.”
Even though his journey is just beginning, Bassett has been outspoken about his faith—a move that is especially bold as many fans are upset about his conversion. Yet, Bassett continues to proclaim the Gospel and the power of Jesus to change lives.
