HGTV Stars Say ‘No to So Many Things’ to Prioritize Kids
By Movieguide® Contributor
HGTV stars Ben and Erin Napier prioritize their kids over their jobs and fame.
“It’s so hard. It’s harder for our work family because they know the girls and our home life is our first priority,” Erin told TV Insider of the challenges that come with putting family first. “We have to say no to so many things. We have to say no to schedule changes that are at the last minute. We say no to working after five. We say not to working overnight. We say no to almost everything that might disrupt the girls’ lives.”
The HOME TOWN stars share daughters Helen, 6, and Mae, 3.
“You just have to prioritize what you say no to because when you say yes to something, you’re really saying no to something else,” Erin continued. “That’s what we are always trying to figure out. What are we saying no to that we can say no to?”
The couple previously told PEOPLE that they couldn’t do what they do without support.
“We bring one of our moms every time we come,” Ben shared, with Erin adding, “And our moms don’t hate it either!”
Beyond prioritizing time with their kids, the Napiers are also fiercely protective of their privacy. Especially because their kids are still too young to fully understand what it means to be famous, Ben and Erin keep them out of the spotlight as much as possible.
“Helen doesn’t really want to be on TV,” Erin explained. “Mae doesn’t even know what it is. She doesn’t know what we do for a job. She just says we fix ugly and sad houses. For both of them, they kind of feel like because all of their family and friends are part of it, they think that is what everyone’s mom and daddy does. That everybody has a TV show.”
“For Helen, she is more of an introvert and private,” she continued. “So, you don’t see a lot of them on TV this year. If they are on TV, it’s because they absolutely had to be there with us.”

HOME TOWN Season 8 will return on Sunday, Dec. 29 at 8 p.m. ET.
“This season, fans can expect the creative husband-and-wife duo to ‘complete an addition to expand a cramped lake house, face some unavoidable setbacks while trying to save a historic homestead, and revisit a house they’ve previously renovated to make room for a growing family,'” Southern Living reported.
To further empower their kids to stay away from the entrapments of technology, the Napiers have set a rule that they will not allow them to join social media until after they graduate high school. This comes from the lessons they have learned from living life in the public eye.
