Marvel comics released an exciting update about the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy, including a roster change which sees some of the most iconic characters replaced by the likes of Nighthawk and Captain Marvel.
“It’s great to be back telling cosmic stories as part of the IMPERIAL event,” said writer Dan Abnett who worked on the original Guardians in 2008 and is back for the upcoming comic book project IMPERIAL WAR: IMPERIAL GUARDIANS. “My time spent with Nova and the guardians back in the day was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in comics, and Jonathan [Hickman] is orchestrating exactly the kind of epic-SF-scale, character-driven, and the Galaxy – and the Guardians – won’t be the same again! I’d say it’s the best jumping-on point for Marvel Cosmic since the original ANNIHILATION.”
Though the Marvel comics do not immediately affect the MCU, most of the stories told in the movies are heavily influenced by past comics. Thus, the new roster of the Guardians of the Galaxy — Captain Marvel, Gamora, Nighthawk — may end up on screen sometime soon.
As for the actors who play the Guardians characters in the MCU, many of them hope the team reassembles some day as it provides a unique set of characters to the MCU.
“I mean, so far, I think that she has [gone for good] for me, but I don’t think Gamora has gone for good,” explained Zoe Saldana, who plays Gamora. “I think it would be a huge loss for Marvel if they didn’t find a way to bring back the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. It’s just such a fan-favorite group of misfits, you know?”

Bringing the story back, however, may prove easier said than done as writer and director James Gunn has since moved on to become the architect of the DC cinematic universe. With Gunn at the helm, Chris Pratt, who plays Star Lord in the MCU, has expressed interest in joining the DCU given the chance.
“If it could fit into my schedule and it made sense, I would love it,” Pratt said. “I just have to leave that to the fans and people like James to decide.”
“Anything is possible, and especially with James over at DC, maybe there’s something that would be right over there,” Pratt later added. “How about both? Let’s do both. I think it’s 100% both.”
Until then, Gunn has his work cut out trying to revive the dying super hero genre at DC. Earlier this month, he released SUPERMAN, which performed extremely well at the box office, suggesting that the genre may just have more to give.
