Dean Cain made his directing debut in LITTLE ANGELS, which he was inspired to write after watching his niece and goddaughters’ soccer games.

“I would go to her [his niece’s] soccer games and my goddaughter’s soccer games on the weekends, and there’d be 5,000 kids playing,” Cain told Movieguide®. “And I was like, ‘This is crazy. What do they watch like nights before games?’”

“The most recent film was like LADYBUGS back in Rodney Dangerfield days,” he continued. “So, we talked about making a film like this and I thought it was a great idea and so here we go.”

In LITTLE ANGELS, a Division 1 college football coach uses a female placekicker as a publicity stunt. After she misses a goal, he makes unkind remarks about female athletes, so the NCAA and the university suspend him. To get his job back, he has to coach a 12-year-old girls’ soccer team.

Cain’s favorite part of being on set was working with his cast — a soccer team of girls.

“They’re really a great fantastic bunch of young ladies, and they learn how to be a team and a family at the same time, and that’s what it’s all about,” Cain said.

The cast worked with legendary soccer player Brandi Chastain.

“I used to play club soccer, so it was really cool meeting her,” said Cain’s niece, who starred in the movie. “And it was just great training with her, and it actually taught me a lot.”

“Brandi Chastain obviously is a legend. Has the greatest goal in U.S. World Cup history, I think, beat the Chinese in the World Cup…My character doesn’t know really how to coach soccer,” Cain said. “So he brings her in to help him out to have sort of a seminar and teach him how to teach the girls and gets him advice and she replies and says yes and does it.”

The girls had a lot of fun on set and off set, acting, crafting and just hanging out.

“We all got so close, and I think that was just because we were intentional with hanging out with each other,” said Jewell Isabelle.

Cain performed his coaching role well.

“Whenever he would give us like speeches and stuff during like scenes, it felt so real and natural,” said Emily Nicole Gonzalez. “I don’t feel like any of us even had to feel like we’re acting. Like it actually really touched us, and it was special.”

Part of Movieguide®’s review of the movie reads, “LITTLE ANGELS is a funny, cute, heartwarming sports comedy…LITTLE ANGELS has a strong moral, pro-family worldview with positive Christian content. Coach Jake realizes his life has been pretty empty because he’s had nobody to share it.”

The movie came out June 6 and is currently available in theaters.
