Will Glen Powell Take Over the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE Franchise?
By Movieguide® Contributor
Is Glen Powell getting ready to star in another Tom Cruise franchise?
The actor recently addressed the rumors that his TOP GUN: MAVERICK co-star had selected him to take over the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE series.
Powell’s answer? “My mom would never let me do that.”
“That’s the worst gig in town, everybody knows that. That’s a death trap!” he joked, referring to Cruise’s habit of doing his own death-defying stunts.
Powell met Cruise when the two starred in TOP GUN: MAVERICK, and the pair became close.

“Cruise gave me [this] advice,” Powell told CBS. “He said, ‘When things pop-off, it’s just gonna get very loud,” Powell recalled. “Nothing else has changed, but you determine how loud you need all that noise to be. You can turn it up or you can turn it down, but it’s up to you. And I think that’s the big thing that I’ve realized right now.”
The TWISTERS star added, “It’s just louder than I expected it to be, but it’s also completely manageable.”
As for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, it doesn’t look like Cruise has plans to hand over the role of Ethan Hunt any time soon.
The trailer for the eighth installment in the franchise, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE — THE FINAL RECKONING, dropped earlier this week, and the movie will arrive in theaters May 23, 2025.
“In the action-packed trailer, Cruise scuba dives and explores a wrecked submarine, flies and falls out of a biplane and does a lot of running,” Variety reported. “Angela Bassett is also revealed to be back as CIA Director Erika Sloane, after she first appeared in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE — FALLOUT.”
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE — DEAD RECKONING premiered in 2023, to the delight of fans and critics, as its release had been delayed due to COVID-19.
